I only started watching Big Bang Theory this year. Now I want to go back and watch the first season.
I just started watching Jericho a couple months ago when the WB started showing it. It's funny to go back to the original threads on TCF after I watch each episode. SUPER JAKE!
I only started watching 2 1/2 Men in the 3rd season (I think). I've stopped since then.

I started watching Law and Order after season 8. Since then I don't think I have missed more than a couple episodes, and have probably seen all but a couple of episodes due to cable reruns that feed my dvr for years.
I started watching Scrubs in Season 2 I believe, and caught up with season 1.
The past few months I just jumped on both NCIS and House thanks to USA reruns. I have probably seen about half of all the episodes of each of those shows, maybe 60% of the NCIS episodes.
I like it when I can find a show to catch up on later as it is fun running through a bunch of episodes in a relatively short time. I started recording NCIS, for example, in November/December on my DVR, and had 54 episodes queued up before I started watching.
I have thought about watching Boston Legal, maybe through Netflix. From memory too I think the whole first season of Six Feet Under sat on my tivo for a while after the season ended before I watched it.

Buffy.
Started watching at the end of Season 2. Literally. Part 2 of the season finale. Not the episode you would chose to start watching that particular season but I didn't know it was the finale.

I think it was season 5 or 6 when I started watching Stargate SG-1. The cool thing about that was it allowed me to go back and buy a whole bunch of previous seasons on DVD and catch up in just a few months. :D

The Sopranos and The Shield. I started watching both in season three, I think, and got caught up via Tivo and the DVDs.

I think I started watching SG1 in 2003 or 2004 (I forget what season that was), and caught up on reruns as they were shown.
I missed the entire first season of Heroes, until they had a marathon shortly before S2.

ER, I started and restarted several times. I'm watching the final season and I don't intend to go back to seasons I missed.
House M.D. I started it a few months back when you could get the first four seasons for $5 each on Amazon VoD. I think we're going to be done with season four before the season five DVDs come out.
Stargate Atlantis, I started watching during season four and watched through the series finale. I feel like I should start watching SG-1 from the beginning. Perhaps when my Netflix queue empties in a few years.
I plan on starting How I Met Your Mother some time. We watches a few episodes this season, then watched the pilot. I think I want to watch that one from the beginning.
The Biggest Loser, I started two seasons back and I like it until the game play elements starting in the way.
The Amazing Race, I started during the family edition. I went back and watched a few seasons as they replayed on The Game Show Network. The last race was pretty good and I'm looking forward to the next one. That starts in Feb, I think.

I started Buffy late, because I didn't like the movie. Stargate SG-1 I didn't start until it went into syndication (no movie channels for me).
I started Lost late because I forgot to TiVo the first episode, and then was put off by some of what I heard about it second-hand. Later on I rented the DVDs of Season 1, so at least I started off right, but then by the time I was done watching those Season 2 was half-over (at the holiday hiatus), and I had to decide between jumping in at that point or waiting a year or more for the DVDs; I chose the former and was rather, *ahem*, lost for the rest of the season.

I started watching
Scrubs in season 6
Charmed in season 6 or 7
3rd Rock from the Sun after it was all over
Family Guy in season 5
Two and a Half Men in season 5
Those are all shows that I initially balked at, but thanks to syndication and Tivo, I've seen every episode AFAIK.
And then there's Doctor Who. I started watching when Tom Baker was the doctor.
BSG. On recommedation.
I have been borrowing the discs from the library. I am now on Season 3. Awesome!

I started Lost (the first two seasons), the Sopranos, Weeds (the first three seasons) and Friday Night Lights (the first two seasons) all on DVD (or Netflix streaming).
The only one I watched out of order and then went back was 24. I started that in Season 2.

I am just now watching Firefly for the first time. In fact, just last night my husband paused the episode we were watching and asked "just how OLD is this series?"
He had recognized a very young Zac Efron in one of the scenes. I told him it was from 2002 and then asked him to turn over his man card :)
Like a lot of others in this thread we got started late on House. I think it conflicted with Gilmore Girls at the time...but it is now a can't miss series in our house.
The only other one I can think of is Dexter - but that is just cause we don't subscribe to Showtime...

"Scrubs" -- didn't start watching until the third season.
"Doctor Who" -- didn't start watching regularly until this new version (tried watching it a couple times on PBS in the '80s, but it just didn't grab me)

Didn't start watching Buffy until midway through Season 3. Some people at work were very much into it; I had seen parts of it so knew the basics, but just never made the effort to watch it. I think it was Faith's character that got me into it for some reason.
Tried watching Angel when it started but hated it. Watched it again couple times in season 2 but didn't get hooked until the last few episodes of that season. (I still hate S1 to this day).
Didn't start watching the Office until half way through season 2. Like Angel, I also don't like its S1.
Never saw Dexter until Netflix offered it up for streaming.
Avoided and never watched *any* American Idol until the Season 4 finale. (don't even remember why I watched it.) Have watched religously since Season 5.

For me, it was Buffy.
I started watching in S3 and it was definitely puzzling trying to figure out who was what and what the heck was going on. But it was always entertaining even when I didn't understand why Buffy and her "boyfriend" were so weird around each other. Heh. (Later I got caught up on DVDs, and it made a lot more sense.)
Veronica Mars (S1 finale was the first episode I saw.)
Ack!! Talk about being spoiled.
Were you able to follow any of what was going on? I can't even imagine trying to watch that episode without seeing any of the previous ones.

More recently, I started watching The Office this year - I watched the first 4 seasons on DVD in August/September right before S5 started.
House I picked up in S3, and watched the first 2 seasons on DVD.
CSI I started in S3 as well, and caught up with the first 2 seasons on repeats (there still may be a few I haven't seen).
Veronica Mars, Season 2 (caught the summer repeats of the key episodes from S1).
Firefly - missed it the first go-round (even though I was a huge fan of Buffy and Angel and watched both from the very beginning), watched it in its entirety on DVD the summer before the movie came out.
Entourage and Big Love - we have watched entirely on DVD since we don't have HBO.

Never watched SG1 but now have seasons 1-3 on DVD for watching on the treadmill after I finish BTVS which I never watched while it was on TV and just now I'm on episode 17 of season 4 which is getting weirder and weirder, can't wait to see where it goes. Plus looking forward to the appearance the the missing family member.

I always have to be completely caught up on a show before watching any original airings.
The Office: finally slogged through the S1 DVDs when it was midway through S3 on NBC
Gilmore Girls: started just as it was finishing S4
Desperate Housewives: started during the summer after S1
Veronica Mars: started during the summer of S1
Buffy: started last summer, got through S3 in September and haven't watched it since...not sure why
The Wire: I've watched the first half of S1 at least three times over the past couple years and just can't get into it

I rarely come to a show late. I make an effort to watch any series premiere that looks interesting, then either keep it or dump it.

Just went through both seasons of Mad Men, looking forward to the new season.
Off the top of my head, Hotel Babylon is the only other show I can think of that I didn't tune into at the beginning. I tend to have a good idea of the shows I like so I'm usually on board first episode.
Buffy - S5, I think. I had caught up before new episodes.
BSG - watching first 'live' S4.5 episodes now. Watched 1-4.0 starting about 6 months ago.
Mad Men - through S1 ep5.

Buffy/Angel: Started on DVD in the summer of '03, right after the Buffy series had ended. Watched both series in the order they aired (sometimes just disc-by-disc unless I knew there were crossover episodes) so we got to S1 of Angel while the final season was still running.
Sopranos: Watched season 3 while it was on, then went back and watched 1 & 2 on DVD before S4 aired.
Veronica Mars: Watched season 1 on DVD in under a week leading up to the S2 premiere.
The 4400: We've basically watched each of the first 3 seasons in the summers of '06, '07 and '08. Will finish this coming summer.
The Closer: Watched the first I guess 2 seasons on DVD leading up to whichever season started last summer.
MI-5: Actually started this when it first came on A&E, but after that I've watched them as they've come out on DVD.

Most recent addition is Grey's Anatomy. Just started in December when my daughter was recovering from a tonsillectomy. It's her favorite and she has the DVDs thru season 4. After watching 3 seasons of Dexter and becoming a fan of Michael C. Hall, I was compelled to seek out Six Feet Under. I had only seen a couple of episodes when it first aired, but now I am into Season 4 out of 5. Although I am appreciating MCH's character, I still find it humorous to see "Dexter" singing and dancing and acting gay. LOL! But it is indeed a great show -- although I think the writers were too heavy-handed in the amount of swearing by almost every character.

"Mad About You". It was at least a few seasons in, and originally I didn't watch it since I thought I wouldn't have any interest in a show about a thirtysomething married couple. I liked it, and caught up with the rest in reruns.
and ironically Thirtysomething was a show I thought I'd have no interest in for largely the same reason. I started watching it many years ago in reruns from lifetime. These two shows are I think the last shows I watched tons of in reruns (now I avoid reruns except for maybe _one_ missed episode because I know now that they cut huuuge chunks out for more commercials). Thirtysomething was indeed "whiny yuppies" a lot of the time, but the workplace shenanigans (and the evil boss) were what kept me interested.

Scrubs - I didn't like the promos, and thought it looked stupid. But one of my friends kept saying it was really funny so I watched it. Turned out to be one of many Elliot bra episodes, and I was hooked. (Yes, pathetic, I know)
Arrested Development - I actually started Season 1, episode 1. But on DVD, probably sometime when late Season 2 was airing. (don't know if that counts)
House - I just catch reruns and marathons on USA, starting a couple months ago. It just kind of grew on me. I've probably watched more than half of them so far.
West Wing - forgot when I started watching. Probably season 2 or 3, caught up with 1 on DVD
Buffy - caught 1 episode of season 1 - 3 times, then gave up. Started watching again with what I think was the season 2 or 3 finale. (Caught up later on dvd)
Fame - started watching season 4. Later caught up starting with season 1 on reruns.

I always have to be completely caught up on a show before watching any original airings.
+1
There have been many, many shows I did not start until they were a few seasons in (if not canceled already!), but I invariably go back and catch up from the beginning if I decide I want to give it a shot before watching any new episodes. The only exception I can think of is Dancing With the Stars, which I picked up in Season 2 (but started with first episode that season). It was the first reality series I had ever tried (still is the only one I guess), and I didn't see much need to try to get the first season first (or ever) in that case. But I haven't missed an episode since! :)
Oh... just thought of two more: Cold Case & Without A Trace. I started watching both of those in syndication and eventually started TiVo'ing the original airings without technically going back and starting at the beginning. However at this point I think I have seen nearly every episode of both shows.

The Office, maybe from the start, I know I seen the bit with Dwight's things in Jello, which is supposedly in the pilot or another early episode.
I started watching ST:Voyager the last season with Kes, simply because that is when a local station picked it up, or I found they had it at least. I also missed the last season because that station dropped it.
I got into Seinfeld a bit late, or at least watched it off and on.

X-files for me too, probably 3 or 4 seasons into it (still never saw the finale btw)
Alias (missed 1st 2 seasons, went back and rented DVDs and then watched S3 on ABC)
Rescue Me (similar to above)
Dead Like Me (watched the whole series on HDNet, never had Showtime)
I will probably do something similar with Dexter, which I enjoyed when they showed it last year on CBS, but would like to watch it in all it's glory on DVD, but I don't have Showtime and it's not enough for me to subscribe.

With as fast as shows get canceled, it does not seem worth it to get "invested", until it is valued by either a)the public or b)the network or c)both.
I think I have alot of shows to catch up on....
Many shows do wear off late into the seasons.
For instance I was loving West Wing on DVD, but by Season 6, I could not stay with it.
Same with The Wire; I lost it midway into Season 2.

And then there's Doctor Who. I started watching when Tom Baker was the doctor.Didn't we all? For a long time, that's all my local PBS station showed. Eventually they added Peter Davidson... then John Pertwee... then Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Finally, just a few years ago -- after showing Doctor Who for a couple of decades -- they added the first two Doctors' episodes (the ones that hadn't been destroyed) to the rotation. Before they did, the station asked fans during a pledge drive if they wanted to see the oldest eps -- the station wasn't sure we would, because the eps were in black and white. Unbelievable.
Before Stargate SG-1 came to SciFi, I'd only seen a few episodes on Showtime, during free previews or rare periods of subscription. But SciFi's Monday marathons allowed me to catch up.
I still have not seen the first two seasons of 24.

I started with the West Wing 3-4 Seasons in about at Bartlett's re-election run. Thank ja for TiVo I caught all of the episodes in sequence on Bravo and in syndication. I can still enjoy them when teh TiVo gets them as suggestions.
Likewise I caught the last episodes of "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" later when NBC ran them at random times and the Tivo missed them.
I started watching the entire run of Journeyman after it was canceled and the TiVo had all of the episodes. That wasn't bad.
Oh! I caught Burn Notice from the beginning just this year thanks USA running season one in marathons. I was getting through season one eps while TiVo was recording season two eps. THAT is a keeper.
I have around 5 recent new series saved up. Trust Me, Dollhouse, Chuck... If I don't like the first few I'll get to free up some massive disk space.

I didn't start watching SG1 until it showed up on SciFi (Didn't have Showtime at the time).
Didn't start watching the Sopranos until early in season 3. Interestingly the Mrs says that had we started at the beginning she wouldn't have been able to bear watching as Livia reminded her of Her mother (I sort of agree).
Caught onto Firefly as it was being canceled
Didn't start watching the X-Files until season 2 or 3. It really took a while to catchup with that one
Just watched the Pilot for Veronica Mars this weekend. Looking forward to woroking through Season 1.
I envy you. Great show. I wish I could watch it for the first time again.
Same here.
We're also getting ready to start for the first time the following:
Buffy
Entourage
Breaking Bad
Rescue Me
I may sound like a broken record on my comments with this, but I just love having my library be part of a 35 library consortium. I can request DVDs from across the entire consortium. Most will be delivered to my home library. In rare cases with new DVDs, I may have to travel a bit. For instance, last night on my way home, I had to stop at another library to pick up the breaking bad discs. Interestingly, this particular library is raising funds by "charging" $1 per disc (holder). But I have no problem at all with that.
We're using these series to help fill our summer watching and mostly because all 5 series came highly recommended to us.

Probably most of the shows I've watched I didn't start watching right away.
CSI, ER and Grey's Anatomy to name a few.
I just started watching The West Wing this past January (on DVD). I plan to continue it this summer.

I only started watching Big Bang Theory this year. Now I want to go back and watch the first season.
Exactly the same here. I'd heard about it, it had sounded interesting, but I just never got around to actually watching it. About a month ago somebody brought the show up so I decided to get it from Netflix. My wife and I went through the whole season in a few days. It went from a "never watched" to "won't miss" by the end of the first episode.

Firefly - watched it for the first time nearly 2 years ago.
B5 - finished watching it a year ago.
Scrubs - started sometime in S3.
Office - caught up just before the start of S3.
Seinfeld - started watching midway through S2.
BSG - started S1 after S2.5 aired.

I didn't start watching "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" until a few months ago. It seemed like a lame sitcom and De Vito isn't a favorite actor of mine.
Boy was I wrong, it is now one of my favorite shows of all time. I don't have Bravo, so I'm waiting for the Season 4 DVDs to come out this summer. REALLY looking forward to it. :)

I actually caught Firefly when it first aired, I think the second aired episode, but since the maroons at Fox were airing it out of sequence I was confused and unimpressed. Got the DVD set, watched in sequence and enjoyed it immensely.
I never started watching The Office, even though I have some episodes. It made me uneasy because it was too much like my real work.
Never started BSG, Lost, X-files (1 or 2 shows - no mood for it), Heroes :p I didn't watch Seinfeld religiously but I like what I've caught.

I haven't started watching Supernatural although I think given other shows I do/have watched that I'd like it.
My question is: Is this the kind of show that is best seen from Season 1? Is there character growth and continuity that would be lost. I heard others say the later seasons are better. Is this like Babylon 5 where it pays to watch the first season even though later ones are better?

I don't usually start shows late and if I do, I have to go back and watch all prior episodes so I know I'm not missing anything... One exception would be "Smallville", which I started watching this season.
I saw a commercial for the Cloverfield-esque Chloe's Wedding episode with Doomsday and went to watch it, but realized I needed to see the unfolding of events that led up to it so I stopped after ten minutes then downloaded the first ten episodes of season 8, and have loved it ever since. Luckily the internet exists so if I'm ever consfused on storypoints and I can figure it out easily. Unfortunately 7 seasons is way too many to catch up on.
Crossing Jordan and Third Watch are other shows that I got into by a random episode then caught up with through re-runs.
My coworker is a massive 24 fan but never saw seasons 1 and 2 so she's watching them now and everyday she tells me where she's at, it's hysterical how far off her guesses as to what's gonna happen are. It sucks because watching later seasons you kind of now the fates of a lot of the people but it's still fun.

TAR...12th season.
I envy you. Great show. I wish I could watch it for the first time again.
We recently finished S1 and are about 3 eps into season 2. Loving every minute of Kris....er.....it.
My wife really likes this show. It's so nice to find things we both really like.
