Tivo changed the Tivo HD power supply design at some point. Here's a photo of each design:

Does anyone know if the two designs really are interchangeable? I have to believe that they must be, but I'm no electronics expert so maybe someone else can chime in. Thanks.

the deal database forum talks about breaking DRM and then extraction from TiVo DVRs. No moral high ground on this but this forum has TiVo employees who post here from time to time and they could not if the forum talked about or linked to video extraction from TiVo DVRs.
Actually I would think you would find posters over there who would have the detailed knowledge to answer the question.
What? Did you comment on the right post Zeo?

TTC doesn't allow mention of,or links to, "the other forum". Using ******* to circumvent the filter isn't allowed.
I know the TivoHD uses a different power supply than the S3. Make sure you order the correct power supply.
Power supply that you linked (picture with 2 hard drives) more looks like Tivo HD XL supply, while the first one one (picture with 1 hard drive) looks like TiVo HD.
Most probably Tivo HD XL supply will work with TiVo HD, but not other way around.
I know for sure that TivoHD and S3 power supplies are NOT interchangeable. But I haven't had a chance to experiment with HD and HD XL yet.

Hey thats my TiVo with two drives! lol
TiVo did redesign the power supplies at some point. The pictures above are both THD (not XL). The single drive picture with the crappy power supply has a production date of 15 jun 07 and mine with the two drives production date of 12-aug-07.
There is a higher resolution version of the single drive picture (http://www.gizmolovers.com.nyud.net/Photos/TiVoHD-Review/Large/TiVoHD-inside-3.jpg) and from what I can tell the pinout is exactly the same. The THD power requirements are extremely simple. The unit could run from 3 wires if electrical draw wasn't a concern. The only reason there are so many wires is to prevent the connector or wires from overheating.
It was very easy to get my THD running with a Mini ATX power supply. Here are two example pics

Proof that it actually boots - I removed the stock PS completely

Yeah, sorry to rip off your photos! But thanks for the response. My Tivo HD came with the new style power supply, which recently failed. I had access to one of the older design supplies, so I plugged it in and it seems to be running fine. I noticed that the motherboards were different version numbers, but I can't imagine the power needs would change, and the hard drives are the same, so that's not an issue. Anyway, just thought I'd see if anyone knew more than me on the subject.

Interesting... Your power supply looks identical to the one being used in Tivo HD XL. So who knows, maybe those two are interchangeable.

yep, the OP tried to link the pics from deal directly and his original OP was asking why the hassle on the URL. As I was replying he found some URLs that worked and edited his post. The perils of not quoting, but no big deal in this case - i was just being informative.
