I was just wondering if you still actually needed a phone (land line) for the initial set up of the New HD Tivo's? and if not can you set up via a wireless adapter OR do your have to hook TIVO up directly to the router via the Ethernet port? I remember the initial for the series 2 you needed a phone line before you could do any networking.

I just bought the Tivo HD and set it up with no landline. I bought the Tivo Network adapter and it hooked up with my router with no problems.

Here's a link to the wireless adapter I bought on amazon.com (cheaper than tivo.com)...

As Chris found out, if you configure a broadband connection, a telephone line is no longer needed to setup your new TiVo and connect to the "Mother Ship".

You either have to use the TiVo branded wireless adapter or the ethernet connection if you want to setup using broadband. The TiVo HD (and XL) only work with that adapter. Also, if your router uses WPA2 only, then you will have to disable that until it gets the first software update. I don't think WPA2 was enabled until a later build than is currently shipping with new TiVo HDs.
