TiVo @ CES

If Nero have done what it looks like they've done, I'll just buy a Media Centre PC and shove their S/W on it, as long as I can get it to talk to (read: control) my STB like it does now (rather than a limited DVB-T) - and bam, we're up to the latest TiVo s/w...."Liquid TV"/"TiVo PC" - they're even shipping it with a TiVo remote!

(1 minute in, if you're wanting to skip the rest of the stuff)

As long as you can get SCART/Composite or HDMI into your PC securely (i.e. HDCP compliantly so you don't lose signal) it should be able to record/play it back, yes?

Surely it won't get UK programme data as it's not designed to work over here.

Long thread on it here:

You can download a 30day trial for free
and have a play, but as carl says above

-no uk guide data = not much use.

Wait to see if/when it's launched with UK support.

The point being it would be a replacement, and I'm happy to continue paying a sub for decent guide & prog data.

I'm tempted to just buy a US TiVo HD box and use it for the downloaded HD stuff only!

A Popcornhour and membership of the "right site" gives you all the HD content you will ever need. Does a US HD tiVo play matroska files? Everything is out there if you know where to look and it makes TiVo redundant except for recording legacy material which is in SD anyway.

I already have a small silent media PC that can play EVERYTHING, so no need for popcornhour.

What I don't have is TiVo Series 3's slick interface and ease of use.

I don't think the popcornhour or any other non-TiVo PC software has TiVo series 3 visual suggestions and google like search by rank/popularity etc..

Obviously live sports are rarely streamed in realtime in HD, so a UK TiVo HD is still needed.

Cyril - what do you use for a media PC & what software do you use? I'm looking at this myself and want to pick the right components - I've already decided it needs PCI-E for the Hauppage Freesat HD card so it can't be too miniature.

I use them for work, surfing, everything you use a PC for :)
If you mean hardware they are mostly pre-built: Toshiba Qosmio, Sony XL100,Elonex Artisan, Advent DHE and a Sony AR71.

Plus watching (and maybe later editing) archived SD and HD video, recording SD freeview. Intend to record satellite in SD and HD later, but too busy. Might get round to it next year :)

HD is recorded via a Fortec Innovation and transferred by USB hard drives.

I use Vista Media Centre, but mostly Windows Media Centre 2005.
Will upgrade to Vista TV pack later.

Intend to use MythTV and Media Portal and XBMC, but will probably never get round to it.

My next AV gadget tasks are automating lighting, programming my remotes for the 2000th time, installing Windows Home Server and finishing my Sonos and HD matrix distribution
