View Full Version : Changing Tivos

My dad has decided that he needs to change his system to take advantage of HD so will be purchasing the FoxSat DVR. I have, of course, mentioned that is isn't a Tivo but he has said that he will have to live with it as he wants the better PQ and, of course, HD.
The upside is that I am inheriting their LT-sub'd Tivo :D
Now mine, of course, has a TurboNet Card in it and I was thinking that, instead of cutting new bits out of my parent's unit I could simply swap Mobos. Is this a feasible idea?
That said, I'm not best pleased with my Tivo at the moment. I have been waiting for the BBC to re-show HSM2 (DOGless and in W/S) but when it finally gets round to it, and after nearly two years of faultless recording, my Tivo decides to BlueScreen on me  :( :( :(

Why do you need to cut bits out of the TiVo casing? If it's for the ethernet cable, route it through an existing hole by one of the bottom mount for the fan. You only need to bend the top fan lugs, remove the fan and hey presto! a hole in the bottom that's just the right size for an ethernet plug. If there's a rubber boot on the plug you might have to slide it back temporarily.
The fan will fit back in place perfectly with the cable routing beneath it.
Cheers,
Phil

A better idea would be just to swap your HDD and turbonet card into your parent's TiVo.
No other changes needed, as of course all drivers and settings are on the HDD.

I know that :) It was the card that was worrying me as I just seem to remember it taking and work to install it in the first place which I didn't want to duplicate so thought swapping the mobo might be easier.
I'll take a closer look at both units when my dad has installed his HD stuff.

When I fitted mine I managed to find a flat ethernet cable which didn't not stop the case being put on intact.

Well, I finally got hold of my parent's LT-sub'd unit. I'm just going to swap the drives around. I won't bother adding another one; for now, at least, as I don't have a PC available to do the work on :(
If I call and cancel the DD on my (now old!) monthly unit, I can still use it for a while as long as it doesn't make a daily call, right? It won't be more than two weeks, that's for sure :) Just need time to swap the TerboNet Card over but the sub is due on July 1.

Well I just cancelled the DD so that's me a tenner a month better off now. Until I find something else to spend it on I suppose ;)
So now I have a spare Tivo. Do I keep it for spares or sell it on? History suggests I won't need it, but then it is also a rule that as soon as you get rid of something you will need it shortly after
I do have some other bits which can go on Ebay though - a brand new remote; a Samsung HA250JC hard drive (around 2 years old, bought new) all ready to re-do GS, and two un-used PSUs still in their original packaging - unless anyone wants to make me an offer ;)
ETA: Above items now on Ebay. Same UserID.
