Hi,

I'm looking for some help here.
My trusty series 2 Tivo is having reboot issues.
It was working fine connected to the network where it has run since 2003.
I've replaced the hard drives a few times since then. Always getting bigger :-)

I recently moved it (while it was plugged in) to plug in my new Blu-Ray player. The next day I noticed that it had started rebooting in a loop. It was stuck in the reboot cycle between the grey powering up screen and the orange almost there screen.

After a quick consult on tivocommunity, I saw several posts about the drive going bad. It was a remanufactured 250 GB drive so of course I unplugged it and ran out and bought a new drive.

I then used instant cake to put a new image on the new 500 GB drive.
I put everything back together and plugged it all back in.

However, even with a brand new drive I am still getting the same reboot loop!
So I did a little more digging on the forum.

I came across a few references to the USB adapter.

So now I am able to get the new drive to boot up and load if I do not plug it into the network. Everything works fine if I use the modem and the phone line. When ever I plug in the wireless adapter the tivo crashes and reboots.

Just for kicks I tried my wired ethernet adapter and also my wireless adapter from my other tivo. As soon as I plug either one of them in the tivo reboots.

I then tried swapping out my new 500 GB drive for my old 250 GB drive. This boots up. But again once I plug in either USB device the tivo reboots.

Both USB's work fine in my second tivo.

Any thoughts?

Make of the "bad" tivo is the original Tivo Single Tuner 140060.
Make of the good tivo is the 540 series.

The network adapters are
Netgear WG111 wireless G and
Faralon 10/100 wired ethernet.

Help! I'm looking for suggestions to get my bad tivo back on the network without it rebooting and without having to resort to the 20 foot phone line!

Thanks in advance to you all for your suggestions.

The only supported adapter is the TiVo wireless adapter, which also supports WPA.

This is a known issue with S2 Tivos and USB adapters. The USB ports are not plug and play and inserting a USB cable while the Tivo is running will cause it to reboot. You need to connect the USB adapter with the Tivo unplugged and then let it boot up.

The only supported adapter is the TiVo wireless adapter, which also supports WPA.
Perhaps that's the only adapter that Tivo supports, but there is a whole laundry list of adapters that will work just fine.

I've personally had issues with the Netgear WG111 adapter. It wasn't that it would cause trouble specifically when being with a TiVo, but the adapter would get extremely warm when in use -- and it had a tendency to get "confused" when there were lots of wireless networks in the area.

The only supported adapter is the TiVo wireless adapter, which also supports WPA.

The Tivo website states
any adapter not listed as compatible in this table is considered to be unsupported if you are experiencing a problem
So if it is listed it is supported.

Your statement is only true for the HD TiVos.
The TiVo Wireless G Adapter is the only wireless network adapter that is supported for use with HD TiVo DVRs.

Thanks guys.
I am having the problem with the looping tivo even with a wired USB. Though it just started.

Also I have had the WG111 working with my other tivo for several years.
Though it did have a tendancy to get "confused". When it did I would un plug it from my 540 series and then plug it in again (hot not with the power off) no problems, no reboots.

I tried it as I was typing this out and it works! :D At least for now.
Thanks.

Any luck getting it to work? I am having the same problem with a 140060 model and an smc2862w-g wireless adapter. If I plug the adapter in while the tivo is on it will freeze the tivo as soon as the adapter light comes on. I have left it over night like that and it stays frozen. If I plug the adapter in before I power up the tivo I get stuck on the "almost there. just a few minutes more..." screen indefinitely. It has been 2 weeks now so now my program information has run out. I do not even have a land line installed in my house so that is not an option.

Hi No luck. I was thinking of sending to off to weaknees to get repaired but the repair cost is too high. http://www.weaknees.com/flat-fee-tivo-repair.php

I bought a used one on ebay for $20. even with adding it on at $7/month to tivo there is around a 2 year payback on the repair. I'd rather give my money to tivo for subscriptions.

It does bug me to have a lifetime tivo just sitting around useless with a huge HD in it.
I might try the phone line option though. Good idea.

That adapter is NOT supported By the model Tivo that you have.
