Hello,

My mom's 240 Tivo series 2 just died about a week ago. She called Tivo Tech Support to see if they could revive it, and they couldn't. She decided to get another one, and was told that if she wanted to transfer her lifetime subscription for free, she would have to get a series 2 again. She chose to get a DT model this time.

The queestion is: is that true that she can only transfer her lifetime to another series 2? I was suggesting that she upgrade to an HD since while she doesn't have HDTV yet, she'll have it some day and it would save her in the long run.

So, did CS "misinterpret" their rules to take advantage of an old lady or am I in left field to think it shouldn't matter what platform she's changing to?

Thanks :)

Chris

In general, lifetimes are not transferable to any other units, but there is sufficient wiggle-room in the terms for TiVo to transfer to another unit of the same capability. There is no wiggle-room to upgrade to a newer/better unit though.

I would interpret this to be a generous agent willing to use the wiggle room rather than one trying to rip-off an old lady.

a free transfer of lifetime for a repair must be to a similar model, so the DT is as good as it gets there. The CSR is correct and not trying to bluff anyone.

Perhaps your Mom could call in to cancel the sub since it no longer works and see what retention can do for her instead.

of course, a new hard Drive in the 240 model is likely to be all the fix that is needed, have you explored that option?

Perhaps your Mom could call in to cancel the sub since it no longer works and see what retention can do for her instead.Retention is usually used to keep a paying customer on the account list. But if she is on a lifetime unit there is no continuing revenue that TiVo would be trying to retain.

I think offering a replacement unit of the same type is about as generous as the company would go. I may be wrong though.

However, since TiVo is such a mean/ugly/greedy/despicable company that recent posters seem to think they are then why would they even go this far.

oops. I :p at myself.

I would take the DT then as it is better than fixing the hard drive.

Roger that, I wasn't inferring that they weren't being generous :). Just that I was hoping they might not have given her the full options.

It was an upgraded HD in the first place, and I'm a ways away to try to fix it at this point. I figure I'll throw a bigger one in her new one if she finds she needs it again.

Thanks guys!! Helpful as always.
