The company that owns the NBC affiliate in Seattle (KING-5), owns a second station in the same market called KONG-6. The first-run programming is all on KING-5, and while KONG-6 runs repeats of KING-5 newscasts, repeats of Dr. Phil/Oprah in primetime, etc.
My wife is a fan of the Soap Opera "Days of Our Lives," which normally runs on KING-5 at 1 p.m. We have a season pass on it so she can watch it later in the afternoon. At that time, KONG-6 usually runs a repeat of the KING-5 local noon news broadcast.
BUT, when there is local or national breaking news (snow-storms, armed stand-offs or presidential press conferences), the breaking news runs on KING-5 with a banner on the bottom of the screen reading "For Days of Our Lives tune over to KONG-6." While this is great for those watching live who care more about the Jason/Ashley/Brandon love triangle that real current events, those who record their soaps for later viewing stuck with 30 minutes of droning Senators or local reporters standing at a street corner with something intereresting may or may not happen.
So if the company owns TWO stations, WHY NOT leave "Days" on KING-5 and run a banner reading "BREAKING NEWS: Stuff might blow up. Tune to KONG-6 for continious coverage."
That way people watching live can pick what they want to see, and DVR users don't miss their shows.
