I saw that tivo.com was selling factory-renewed Series 3 HD's for $179.99 before the holidays. I was waiting to get through the holidays before ordering one and now they are out of stock.

How often do they come back into stock or will they? Anybody know the history of how Tivo sells these?

It happens pretty often.

Thanks, it will just give me more time to decide if I want a Tivo HD and keep cable. Or get the new LG Blu-ray with internet connectivity and drop the cable. I am leaning towards dropping cable because even if I get the HD Tivo, Time Warner Maine has a limited number of HD channels available through their cable cards.

The same thing happened to me. I went to order one and they were out of stock :(

If you buy Refurbished from tivo.com, you cannot got a multi-service discount for its 1st year.

Well the refurb is only $30 less than what you can get it for at retail.

I was able recently to use a refurb to replace a $6.95 month to month S2 by calling TiVo and cancelling service on the new refurb.

AFAIK, the new units are $299 and the refurbs were advertised at $179. I am a new customer so the monthly fees are a moot point for me.

I am still leaning towards a Roku or internet enabled Blu-ray HD with broadcast cable as we are too far away to get OTA reception. I also need the broadcast cable to get a discount on my cable modem.

Amazon.com has it for $249 right now with free shipping. Others have posted tin the forums a special at 6ave for $208, but I don't know if that's still good.

I just checked - 6ave.com is currently out of TiVo HD. The current price listed is $299.00.

6ave required a coupon.. "AFLTV2008" I think. Check it when they are back in stock.

No, and no.

As others have said, until the last couple of days, the best retail price reported had been $208 vs $180 less .01 for the refurb.

As I said, you can probably get TiVo to change your subscription to what you want. So its $30ish

The Tivo HD is back in stock at tivo.com but at $199.99 and, yes, you must purchase a new plan with it. So good for new customers, not so much for existing. 6th Ave is currently out of stock on their Tivo HD so I can't check to see if the coupon mentioned earlier in this thread is still valid.

I haven't made a decision yet but am leaning towards a Roku or wait till April for the new LG Blu-ray internet enabled DVD players.

How much is a new plan? Can the HD version be used to watch shows recorded on other Tivos if you don't pay for the plan?

Does anyone know if it's possible to order one of these with monthly service and then have it switched to lifetime using a lifetime giftcard? We still have a lifetime giftcard from way back and we were thinking about getting a TiVoHD to help catch some of the overflow from a couple of nights where we can't get everything in HD. This factory renewed one is slightly cheaper then buying one new, but it would only be worth it to me if I could use the lifetime giftcard.

Dan,

I'd call and see if you can use the lifetime giftcard while purchasing a refurbished model.

TiVo let me cancel the service I ordered with the $179 refurb and then sub the service # for an old $6.95/mo S2 which I retired. If that is any indication as to what they may allow for you.

Beware of Tivo HD refurbs...I am on my third one and am going to send it back shortly. The first one had a bad power supply and the next two have had bad hard drives. Not to mention that two of them were beat up on the front panel. I am hoping to get them to send me a new one after all this hassle. At least they haven't charged me for shipping......

Beware of Tivo HD refurbs...

Yeah, mine worked, but the case wasn't screwed on correctly, causing it to vibrate a little and make a humming noise. Annoying.

i just got my 199.99 refurb the other day and it looks brand new! The only thing that had wear on it was the user manual. all the other manuals and stuff were brand new. The remote was also brand new. My wife and I are loving tivo so far! Right now we use it for OTA hd, which is great! Also, tivo has much better signal strength when directly swapped with the ota converter box. Picture quality is much better too, since the converter box was analog and tivo is 720p.(my flat panel pre-dates when they required digital tuners were to be built in.)

It took my brother 3 units to get a good refurbished one as well. The first one had a loud buzzing in one channel and the second one had extremely low audio on one tuner (just the tuner audio as the TiVo sounds were at the correct level). The third one seems to be working well so far. A real pain considering the shipping time to receive the replacements (5 days typically) and not a very good first impression.

I just got a $199 refurb. It arrived yesterday and was DOA. They are sending me another one. The unit did have a few scratches here and there. Not a good first impression.
