Has anybody heard whether TIVO is going to come out with a software fix to make the Series 2 compatible with DTVPal? If it works with other boxes, how come not DTVPal? I can't afford to buy a whole new box or TIVO.

The DTVPAL uses a different channel changing scheme than most of the other boxes. Don't expect a fix.

Getting a new TiVo won't do you any good. None of them are being set up to work with the Pal.

What I don't understand is WHY you'd need to set it up to use the Pal.

The DTVPal has its own onboard event timer.

My suggestion?

Set the TiVo up to use one of the other boxes, and use the Pal with it instead.

Set the Pal's timer up to turn itself on and change channels at the same time the TiVo does.

Since the TiVo is expecting to work with an OTA digital box, your programming info will be correct in "Now Playing" once the recordings are made, and the Pal will have tuned itself to the channel the TiVo was looking to record.

The only glitch is when watching Live TV, you'll have to use the Pal's remote to change channels.

There's another way to go about it, namely setting The TiVo up to use a satellite box with OTA digital tuner, telling the TiVo it's working with a DISH box (the remote codes are the same), and going into "channels I receive" and deleting all the cable-type channels, leaving only the OTAs. The only problem I've found in doing this with my Series 1 (which isn't upgraded to use the converter boxes at all) is that for some reason all the sub channels aren't listed with the satellite lineups, so there are a couple sub channels I can't set a timer for. Big deal. I don't have "Now Playing" info anyway, and can still set the TiVo to turn on and record at a given time, and set the Pal to change to the needed channel anyway.

It's listed as a non-supported box on the Tivo site and I believe that TivoPony or TivoJerry also said they would not be supported.

It's not been a secret that they would not be supporting these boxes and since the DTVPal took so long to come out then it would have made sense to get a different one.

If it works with other boxes, how come not DTVPal? I can't afford to buy a whole new box or TIVO.

So what? it is using the same channel changing scheme as my tv, and this tv came out LONG before any converter box.

Come on gang. this is a simple ifdef to use a "-" or not. if other you do 0071 else you do 007-1. Depending on how complex they did the code in this area (and it should not be that bad) it should be an easy fix. Wonder what they used in this area Perl, I do know something Linux.

And TIVO can't use the they did not know... Even I knew they would be using the same scheme that the 622,722,941,942... and their other boxes that do dTV OTA. These came out years before any converter box we have today.

I just really don't see why it is not supported... It might be a don't support at all cost.. we don't like them because of the court actions... Oh well if enough units are bought and we all complain... the squeaky wheel gets the most grease :)

TiVo has had a list of supported boxes (see post # 4) - if you wanted to use a converter box with a Series 2 TiVo why would you buy one of the few clearly listed as not supported?

This is nothing new for TiVo take a look at the list of supported, USB WI-FI adapters, USB to Ethernet adapters, or eSata add on drives for TiVo HD's. All very short lists (some with only one supported device).

Thanks,

yea I know... I was just venting... I leaped before I looked (did not know there was a list of supported units) and went down a dark deep hole. I will set up dual timers and be done with it.

and as to USB WI-FI adapters I have a supported one (well it is on the list).. works fine as long as I leave wpa* off.

Thanks for the kind words... have a nice day

yea I know... I was just venting... I leaped before I lookedAs did I - got one of the first coupons early last year and had to purchase a box before TiVo even officially supported anything. Actual purchased a TiVo HD & HD TV since then but will be getting a channel Master 7000 for one of the Series 2 TiVos (the other S2 is attached to SAT). Traded a non-TiVo owning family member the box I bought for their coupon - so I am only out $10 the first box cost. You might see if someone will trade you a coupon for the DTVPal.

Thanks,

It is not particularly relevant. AFAIK, it was just last year TiVo even considered adding digital OTA box support to the Series 2.

Come on gang. this is a simple ifdef to use a "-" or not. if other you do 0071 else you do 007-1. Depending on how complex they did the code in this area (and it should not be that bad) it should be an easy fix. Wonder what they used in this area Perl, I do know something Linux.

As simple as a code fix may be, it still needs tested to make sure it properly works and does not negatively affect anything else. They probably don't want to go through that again. I suppose it is just easier to take some flack for DTV PAL boxes not being supported, than possibly breaking something that affects more users.

And TIVO can't use the they did not know... Even I knew they would be using the same scheme that the 622,722,941,942... and their other boxes that do dTV OTA. These came out years before any converter box we have today.

They didn't know for sure, and the DTV PAL was late coming out.

I just really don't see why it is not supported...

As has been said, the DTV box support has been written to use a -/. delimiter, and probably the code was finalized by the time they got a DTV PAL to test.

It might be a don't support at all cost.. we don't like them because of the court actions...

I don't believe it has anything to do with the current legal situation between the two companies. It is a simple matter of the timing of either it is not worth the time and effort to include support, or they could have included support if they had a unit early enough.

Oh well if enough units are bought and we all complain... the squeaky wheel gets the most grease :)
Well, their support list states the Echostar boxes are not supported.

Attempted the link in post 4 and also attempted the hunt in peck from Tivo's main service site. I realize I am a noob, but I could not locate the new list location. Ironically, I purchased 3 of the Echostar TR40's for my aging parents with the express purpose of connecting my old series 2 boxes for them. Foiled again.

A noob request. Where is the new link...the original in post 4 is missing. PS. Purchased a slew of the TR40 because of their "best" rating. Whoops!

This a perfect supporting evidence for open source. One could supply the code if it could be easily incorporated.
