I took advantage of the TiVo HD Lifetime Transfer for $199 offered a year ago. I gave the S1 that used to have Lifetime to a friend and now she is hooked. With the 1 yr. free coming to an end, what is the best way for the friend to keep TiVo?

She uses the current S1 (30 hr.) with basic cable, an old TV and is not a "power user." Very basic needs. I'm tempted to have her simply sub the current S1 since she knows how to use it, it's already hooked up and transition would be seemless. That said, it seems silly to pay for a subscription to such an old machine.

I have 1 or 2 new S2s sitting around the house I could give her and have her sub them for newer machine and more capacity.

Or she could buy a refurb + service from TiVo.

What is the best deal out there for her? TIA.

will you be my friend :)

Let here have the Series 2 with more room and then she can decide if she wants to try out Amazon downloads or other broadband features.

if the TiVo will be on her own account then there is no difference in getting a refurb as far as service cost goes.

If the Series 1 is one of the ones that should be able to record without being subscribed, let the person who has "basic needs" use it as a basic DVR. No real TiVo features, but it'll still record.

I suppose that's not exactly what she's "hooked" on, tho'.

The best deal for her would be for you to give her the S2.

I'm in a similar situation, having given my old S1 to a cousin. Now that the free year is ending, how do I transfer service?

Do I just call to cancel (since the website doesn't seem to do that), then they use the website to activate service??

Can I cancel the auto-rollover today without cutting their service immediately?

Thanks,
tlc

Just remember if you don't want that S1 to stay subscibed, call TiVo and cancel. If you don't, they will bill your credit card under a 1 year contract.

Tlc's would go month to month with no commitment because it would fall under the previous policy because it was put on the one year prepay prior to 5/08.

To answer his question, Yes, I believe their new system allows you to cancel now and still receive service until your current subscription actually ends. They can tell you for sure when you call.
