I used to think I'd pick up a Series 1 for the bedroom where I only watch 2 news shows before going off to sleepy town. But the eBay price was a little more than I wanted to pay (I'm kinda cheap sometimes) anyway I found a guy selling one but was curious if they still have any value. I've seen some recent post about the S1 giving folks trouble. See it was my understanding that you could use a Series 1 without subscribing, like a VCR. Is this still the case?
Thanks!

Only certain Series 1s produced before Oct 2000 have that capability. The real test is whether it originally shipped with version 1.x or version 2.x software installed. Since they will all be updated to 3.0 now the only way to be sure is to call TiVo with the TSN (TiVo Service Number) and ask them.
If it qualifies you could set up manual recordings by time and channel but you won't have any guide data. Unless you find one with a lifetime subscription I wouldn't pay much over shipping costs.
There is also a problem with many S1s right now failing the daily updates, but that shouldn't affect an unsubbed box much.

No. Most S1 TiVo's can record manually without an EPG or sub. S1's activated with Lifetime Service before 1/21/2000 are eligible for a one-time Lifetime Service transfer.

Here's a thread which covers manual recording on unsubbed S1's.

WannaB, if you can use a cheap unsubbed S1 which records manually, PM me!

Thanks folks! It appears this was mfg Aug 2000 so I can record without a sub but (correct me if I'm wrong) I can not transfer video to the S1. I currently use pyTivo but with no MRV that doesn't matter, right?

Search the TiVo underground for TiVoweb or TiVowebplus. You'd have to hack the S1 and add a network interface if it doesn't have one now. Completely different system than those used for S2, S3, or HD.

Series 1 does not support network transfers like a Series 2 does. While you can pull vidio from and push video to Series 1s, it is OT here because it is called extraction, and takes a bot of work.
I have one and as long as the display size is limited it works and looks great. I have not had any problems downloading program guide data.

... takes a bot of work.Is that like, between a bit and a lot? Or does it mean you need to have a robot do it? :D

The only major downside I can see with my S1 is the lack of folders. Otherwise it is in some ways more flexible than the current models.

I've just about talked myself out of it..... not being able to xfer video to it may be a deal breaker for me. Thanks for all the input.

But you can transfer video to it using mfs_ftp.
