sorry for the 2 questions, i thought i would buy at best buy and get an extended warranty, but they said they don't sell them. Where can you buy and get one, and if you do get the lifetime, if you have hdd failure, can you change it yourself? Thanks

The TiVos, in general, are very reliable so an extended warranty would be questionable at best.
A HDD failure with a lifetime unit isn't a problem because the lifetime is associated with the motherboard, not the drive. HDDs are the most common failure and you can replace them yourself.

When my tivo died because of a bad power supply best buy gave me credit to buy new one under the best buy extended warrenty that I had taken out. When I called Tivo I explained what happened and they changed my lifetime sub to the replacement unit.
