Hi All...

I did a little searching and couldn't find a thread on this...

My niece has a Tivo Ser1 (Sony SVR) that has a TurboNet card installed by me. She's at Pepperdine University and didn't have issues for 2 years with the program guide updates using a wired RJ45 connection.

As of this last summer, the school isn't allowing ANY unauthorized connections. To make it simple for everyone, it's laptops/computers only. No routers, no Tivo's, etc. Each computer is noted by it's MAC Address.

So... is there a way to connect the Tivo to a laptop to get the updates? Has anyone tried it? Maybe internet connection sharing, connect the Tivo every week to update the program guide and we should be good to go?

Hmmmm... as I'm typing this, maybe I COULD connect a router that copies the MAC address of her laptop. That might work. Meanwhile however, I'm 100 miles from her and I'm wondering if anyone has tried to share the internet connection on a laptop and plugged the Tivo into it for update.

By the way, there's no phone lines available in the dorms. I guess POTS lines are "so 90's" as my niece would say. ;)

Thank you!!!

Dan B

Internet sharing worked for me on my Vista laptop when my wired ethernet connection was down. I was able to connect wirelessly with my laptop, changed the setting to allow internet sharing, plug the TiVo ethernet cable into the laptop, and force a connection to TiVo. Then when the connection was done, I changed the setting back.

I say get a router that can copy the MAC (and possibly host name) of her laptop and do it that way :) Otherwise you have to keep the laptop on all the time and the Tivo can't connect when she isn't home.
