Have any of the 3rd party disk suppliers managed to emulate HD XL disk partitioning? This would seem like the best arrangement for increasing internal storage, while being compatible with future OS downloads and retaining the external disk capability.

TiVo-HDXL copy can be made but only for TiVo-HDXL (568). If you are asking if you can upgrade a TiVo-HDXL to a 1.5TB Hard Drive, I would think so but i don't know for sure. If your asking if you can put software for other TiVos (like the 652 or 648) on the 568 partition system I don't have that answer.

Let me restate the question:

The TiVo HD XL has a 1TB disk format that TiVo understands, and which supports an additional external drive. Has anyone tried using that format with the non-XL TiVo HD, and if it works, does anyone offer either prepared disks or copy supervision software for that disk upgrade? i.e. does the TiVo software still understand that format when the TiVo ID's as a non-XL HD?

I don't follow what you are trying to say, or do. I don't specifically know what the partitions look like on the THD XL, but I suspect it is no different than that on the ordinary THD.

Just guessing but it sounds like he's looking for a 1TB TiVo HD with support for a plug-n-play external drive. Currently, if you expand the stock internal drive you need to hack the box to add external storage.

Yes, I think it is possible. I don't know of anyone that has done it. You'd need a hacked tivo to load alternate slices into the TiVo-HDXL image.

One reason to do this is to use the 1.5TB drives as a primary drive in other tivo models.
Because of the 1TiB partition size limit in the TiVo kernels, the TiVo-HDXL images are the only ones that will work as a primary drive when expanded onto a 1.5TB drive.

Even the recent Series2 software (9.4.2) seems to support mfs64, so I think you could use a 64bit mfs on a Series2, if you wanted to. There may not be much point, since there are currently other things that prevent expanding beyond 2TiB.
