Ok I love tivo I have a series 1 with lifetime since the start and have just had a couple Fios cable boxes for HD. The trouble is the tivo's have not been big enought till now, the HD XL. So I want to buy one but what about my lifetime, I know I can get $100 off but is there any better offers out there to switch. full price for a tive hd xl and $100 off lifetime is still a big hunk of change.

Folks who are technically savvy and for whom the THX certificaiton and fancy Glo-remote are unimportant can save a few bucks by opting for the basic TiVo HD over the HD XL and upgrading the hard drive themselves.

Depending on what you pay for the 1TB HDD and the TiVo itself savings could be significant.

I was looking into that but to tell you the truth the esata port is something I want also when upgrading them in the past they got slugglish, I rathor just start off right from the start.

Just called tivo it is like just under 1k for the tivo and service, I want to do it but I could rent alot of dvr from the cable co for that. I just hate that I would have to pay for the lifetime service again the same amount I orginally paid.

Are you trying to say that a Tivo HD with a 1tb drive will get sluggish compared to a Tivo HD XL?

6ave has the TiVo HD for $208 using a code (AFLTVO208), that may still be active. A 1 TB drive from buy.com is $130 shipped, or you can buy the WD My DVR Expander 500GB at Amazon for $120. Since you have lifetime, you can add lifetime on the new box for $299.

Some old S1's qualified for a free lifetime transfer. You might ask TiVo if your TSN qualifies for that.

I believe that's what he's suggesting. My 2 upgraded HD models exhibit no such behavior.

I'm pretty sure the one-time free grandfather transfer still applies if you purchased your TiVo branded DVR prior to January 2000.

Dont' know if you qualify but I thought I might mention it anyway - just in case.
