I've had good results staying with brand names (TDK, Sony). The times that I've gotten an error when trying to burn, turns out something was corrupt with the file. No matter how many times I tried to burn that show, it wouldn't work. If I select a different show in "Now Showing" it will burn fine. Oh... you need to use -R discs.

I have a several years old Pioneer S2 w/DVD and had a lot of trouble burning discs when the 4X (or slower disc ceased to be available. Typically got "internal error" message when using higher X factor discs.
What I concluded (short version) was that the allowable recording speed (X factor) was encoded on the disc and the burner hardware was making a best effort attempt to comply. But the software wasn't aware(?) of this and was unable/unwilling to order the drive to slow the recording speed. Additionally, the hardware (CPU) was insufficiently fast to supply an uninterrupted data stream to the burner at the faster rate demanded by the disc. This results in a condition called underrun, but is reported simply as "Internal error".
So, here is what you do:
- Pick a time to record when the unit is idle. Not downloading or processing updates. (Disconnecting the network cable works.)
- Setup your DVD burn and start it.
- Immediately (while is is "preparing") go to "Now Showing" and start to play a program.
- Hit pause.
- Let it sit like that for the duration of the burn.
This minimizes the processor load and I get a successful burn almost every time. (95%+). I use whatever brand of DVD-R discs are on sale.
