Kickstart 54 Help

I have a TiVo HD with a WD DVR Expander attached. The unit has worked fine for the past year, but it is now frequently Freezing and then Restarting during playback of recorded programs (ever since the Fall Update).

I wanted to try doing a Kickstart 54 procedure to test the drives.

I restart the unit holding the Pause key until the red and amber lights and then key-in "54".

I get the following screen.

--> Run S.M.A.R.T tests
Test /dev/hda
Test /dev/hdb
Test /dev/hdc
etc.
===============================

But, when I place the arrow next to: "Run SMART tests" and click the "Select" button on the remote, NOTHING appears to happen.

The screen remains the same (and it doesn't respond to any other remote key pressing). I've waited for 30 minutes (nothing).

Question: What should happen after highlightling the SMART option and clicking "Select"? How long does it take?

If I select one of the other options, I can get some of those tests to run.

The Tivo Tech told me yesterday that the smart feature doesn't work right. skip that step but be forewarned...my tivohd is dead after running all of those tests. I have to pay $50 for a refurbished Tivo HD to be sent!

I know the S.M.A.R.T. tests work ... at least I've run them on my S2 before:

I've never tried on my THD with the Expander though. Maybe it's the existence of multiple drives that messes it up?

Select the second or third option below then run S.M.A.R.T. tests.

Troy - I too have TivoHD with the WD Expander. It has been freezing and randomly restarting over the last week. Sometimes during recorded shows, sometimes during Live TV. I've tried KickStart 54 - but the machine just freezes when I try to run the SMART Hard Drive Tests. So, I cant test the drives. I suspect that something is wrong with the Expander. In fact, I originally had an Expander for a week or two when I first bought the TivoHD and it crashed (wouldnt even start up) - so I returned it. This one has been working just shy of a year and given my past experience - I think its the culprit. I've already RMA'd the drive with WD and am waiting for the new one to arrive before sending my current one back. In no rush to loose all my programs, but this is very annoying. Any luck at getting your Tivo back-up and running? Wondering if I'm headed down the right path. Thanks!

I'm having this exact same problem. Did your freeze/reboot problem go away after removing the Expander? Any luck getting kickstart 54 to work?
