I want to transfer shows I recorded on an RCA DVR40(DirectTv). It has USB ports on the back and it is no longer receiving signal (disconnected... using another TV service). Does anyone know how I can do this? Can I transfer using USB cable/thumbdrive? Does the unit have to be active in order for me to do this?

The USB ports on the DirecTV Tivo units are disabled by DirecTV. If you want to get content off, you will have to play the recording and connect a Tivo or other device to the video and audio outputs and make a manual recording.

DirecTV does not support the TivoToGo feature -- the ability to download recordings -- on their TiVos. If you want the ability to download recordings from your TiVo, you would need to buy a standalone TiVo like the TivoHD for cable / off-air.
DirecTV does not allow recordings to be downloaded from any of their boxes and I would not expect that to change anytime soon.
