We have a Sony TiVo Series I in my wife's office, and we're wondering what the setup will have to be after the digital conversion in February. A number of years ago (before we bought the TiVo HD to be primary TiVo), this TiVo controlled a cable box with pair of IR emittors than hung in front of the TiVo. This caused a lot of frustration since it missed 10-20 percent of channel changes, so we went back to using the TiVo Tuner, even though we had to blow off channels over 100 (this is how it is connected now).

So my questions are:

1) Is a TiVo Series I capable of controlling (changing channels) on the digital tuners you can get with the government coupon?

2) My understanding is that Comcast may have been lying in their ads, and cable boxes may be required for devices without digital tuners or cable cards to receive channels over 30. Is a TiVo Series I capable of controlling the current Comcast cable boxes?

The digital conversion that you refer to, and the converter boxes apply only to OTA (antenna) users. Neither have anything to do with cable customers.

The TiVo will work with basic cable (analog) or with a Comcast cablebox for digital channels.

Ok, if I convert the Series I TiVo to over-the-air operation, can it control the external digital tuner?

Also, will it be able to control the DTA from Comcast so it can record shows on channels over 30?

Maybe a more precise question would be: are the remote codes in the Series I updated, or can it only use remote codes that were programmed into it years ago?

The S1 will not work with the OTA converter boxes unless you use some unsupported work arounds described elsewhere in this forum.

Comcast in Seattle says that they are working with TiVo to provide support for their new DTA boxes. No mention if it will work with S1 boxes.
