Ok, I just put an old SD DVR 40 back into service hoping it can get me through till my contract expires in Feb. with D**.....it has software version 6.3e-01-2-151.....is that the current version? If not, how can I force a download to the newest version....it's been hooked up to the satellite and to a phone line for approximately 4 days already.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

The current version is 6.4a and you can call a directv CSR and ask him to force a download. via phone. then force a call under settings phone.

I just called....been on the phone for about a half hour...no one knows what I'm talking about.....they said you can't force a download on that receiver...I'm sure they're wrong and you're right, but maybe you could give me some more info.

UPDATE: Got a higher level tech on the phone, said there is no way for a CSR to force a download on that receiver, since it's tivo based.....so guess i'm stuck with the old software that constantly resets, which is why I took it out of service.

I have updated over 20 receivers by using the phone connection. If you don't want to wait you can always use DVRupgrade but with instantcake you cannot save recorded shows, Instantcake makes the drive look like new.

Well mine is connected to a phone line, it made successful call after successful call, and the software is not being updated.....under system info it shows the last successful download as today, but the software was not updated, it's still 6.3e.

any other suggestions?

As long as it's working with 6.3e, I wouldn't worry about it.
Afterall, you're only trying to get through February.

Have you unplugged and replugged the system forcing a restart?

You may just have have paitience & wait a few days & eventually, it'll do it on it's own...

Considering a whole slew of receivers were updated sometimes in October without warning, I'd guess it can happen again.

It might be downloading very small pieces of 6.4a (I won't use the word slices since that's used elsewhere) over the phone on every connection, then finally will reboot and use it.
Or DirecTV will throw it into the stream again at some point.

One of those two happened in October...I just don't know which. Either way, I know my system rebooted without a phone call one night (because my receiver was disconnected for the previous 2 weeks), and booted up into 6.4a. (I was forcing calls since July or so...I believe)

Or hopefully they'll have a new release sometime soon.

Um, i don't remember 6.3e being unstable. I wonder if your rebooting is due to a bad hard drive? Anyway just keep having it call in and it will eventually down load the software. You will know when it does because it will be a call over an hour. Are you planning to leave D* after your contract? If not then call them back and see if they will send you a HD unit for a reduced cost. The last time i called they wanted $199 for the unit and the dish install was free. Also if you had a R15 and got the contract why are they not replacing it for free. Isn't that their selling point for leased units vs owned units?
