Could have been worse. A lot of these sequel specials are really, really, bad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0828465/). This is at least watchable.
This is a sequel to the 1974 "The Year Without a Santa Claus". This is a mostly forgettable Rankin-Bass special where Santa wants to take the year off again. (Too much snow? No. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058536/) Someone wrote a nasty letter? No. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208654/) He has a cold? No. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072424/)) The one unforgettable part of the original was Heat Miser and Snow Miser's routines.
34 years later, they get their own special. First, the good parts. They did really get the Animagic animated dolls down -- the style is identical to the original. Mickey Rooney reprises his role as Santa and George S. Irving returns as Heat Miser. They do a new version of the Snow Miser and Heat Miser songs that were pretty good. Irving is amazing, he sounds just like he did back in 1974.
The bad: The incomparable Dick Shawn (the original Snow Miser) is long gone, replaced here by Juan Chioran. The new songs for the special are really lame, and the new villain, North Wind blows. :D
