So I guess Amy's not back after all...
The audio on the Kanye West performances was about as bad as I've ever heard it on SNL. Way over-driven on the first song (I've seen that performance on one of the late-night shows, so I know West didn't mean it to sound like that) and not balanced on the second.

I normally avoid hip-hop/rap, but listened to his songs last night and they weren't half bad.
I'm kind of ashamed almost no one in the audience in 8H got the Oliver Twist joke. That's sad.
Bronx Beat was okay, but I thought there's be more wrapup as it was the last one. But the two hosts coming on to the chef was hilarious. I guess it would have been easier if they hadn't brought up the long amount of time since the last Bronx Beat only to have this be the last one.
The Christmas Dinner, Culhane Wedding toast, Lamps and Christmas Letter sketches were not bizarre, but funny. As was the "cookie" digital short.
I kind of cringed when Armisen came out as Governor Patterson, but it was kind of funny. And good of him to lighten the mood with Amy's goodbye.

His latest album is awesome, it's not much hip-hop/rap.

Bronx Beat
Sorenson Christmas Letter
I liked the lines:
"I wish we had accents."
"Santa Claws... with a W."
"Way ahead of you."

I thought Governor Blagojevich testimony, Christmas Dinner and the Culhane Wedding Toast
were great, real funny stuff.
The rest of it, not so much for me. I was zoomed by the Dave Patterson stuff. I guess by the end I get the joke, they spelled it out pretty well, but to me any joke that you have to infer the context from the joke, well, I think that's asking a lot of your audience.

I thought it was a decent episode, I laughed more than I usually do. Weekend Update was really funny, at least to me. I'll miss Amy Poehler. I wonder who'll replace her, or if Seth will go solo.
Kanye continues to be a ******bag and make crappy music. I cannot stand this idiot. "Voice of my generation" my ass.

Kanye was awful. Which is too bad, because that first song is REALLY good. It just shows how much he processes himself to stay on key.
Laughed sadly at all the Blago stuff, but really, the rest of the show was awful, for me. And anyone who follows these threads knows I'm a fan. But ech. There was nothing I really enjoyed.

LOVED it on Bronx Beat when they were naming meats the butcher liked and they started on "tongue" and Hugh started cracking up.
I liked Hugh Laurie on this and thought he did a pretty good job.
Then there's things like "Lamps". In what world does that not only make it onto paper, but then make it into the show?????? Not one piece of that thing was the least bit funny and it's that kind of thing that will keep me from ever being a "fan" of SNL. Digital Short? I'm not even sure what that means, but like a lot of stuff on SNL, it seems like a long way to go for a poop joke - and not a funny one at that.
I pretty much watch for WU, then wind up watching other stuff on the off chance it will be funny or entertaining. Then I promptly kick myself for wasting that much time on it. It just seems like the humor goes after people that are half stoned or something.

It airs from 11:30 to 1:00 on a Saturday night, that's probably not the worst audience to target.

Part way through the show, I believe it was right after the wedding toast skit, it changed from letter boxed wide screen to full screen (4:3) with the sides cut off. I probably wouldn't have even noticed if it weren't for the graphics in WU going off the edge of the screen. Did this happen everywhere or was it just the Mpls NBC affiliate?

Seemed fine for me in Boston...
I did notice in WU that some guy kept on walking in front of the camera...

Adult Swim makes its living off of people like that, and according to the ratings they get there's at least a million of them.

Pretty nice forum you have here-it'd be a shame if anything happened to it... I have some friends who can watch it for you...your cars too, if you're interested...$2500/month! :D
It looks like your toupee is wearing another toupee! :p
You're supposed to put the Rogaine on the crown, not the forehead! :D
+1 on LOL @Hugh Laurie breaking up during Bronx Beat. "Flirting is free!"

I nearly choked on what I was eating from laughing so hard in the toast sketch when the new guy grabbed the mike and said "WHAAAAAT!" and dropped the mike and walked away.

I've said it several times in this forum, but I'm going to repeat myself again. Since the "Yat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yat_(New_Orleans))" in New Orleans is quite similar to the archetypal Bronx or Brooklyn (or, perhaps, Queens) resident, they could change the title from "Bronx Beat" to Chalmette Chat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalmette_(LA)), leave every line of dialog and every pronunciation and vocal inflection the same and the sketch would still be perfect.
When the line "I wish we had accents" came I laughed so hard I choked on my own saliva and went into a coughing fit.
Damn funny!

This was really one of the most consistently funny SNL shows in recent memory. Bronx Beat was hilarious (after a slow start) and Weekend Update was a total riot, especially when the governor ordered $50 in Circus Tickets on his phone (easy to miss that) as he was wadering in front of the camera during Amy's farewell. Very sad that she is leaving.
I even enjoyed the Lamps skit and was completely sober.
I fast-forwarded through Kanye West however. Ick that was really bad. I think Hugh Laurie might have made a better musical guest; he seems to have a nice singing voice.

Good call!
Hugh Laurie is indeed an excellent musician and singer. I hadn't thought of that.
The last time he hosted he did a comical song, accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica, sort of Bob Dylan style, that was not only musically good, was pretty darn funny.

THANK YOU!
Now I know why I will never be able to consider myself an SNL fan, no matter how much I watch it. Apparently there is just TOOOOOO much they do on there on which the humor is totally lost on me. I saw NOTHING in the "Lamps" sketch that I would consider even remotely funny, but apparently, other people do.
I guess when it comes to SNL, I will forever be a "cull from it whatever (little) will entertain me, then chalk up the rest to wasted time" person.

Looks like NBC is getting hit pretty hard about the Gov Paterson skit. I cringed when it started, but thought it was funny. It was more funny with him blocking the camera angles, I thought that was Will Armistand just doing it, not a "Paterson" thing.

Freak 'em if they can't take a joke.[/Gov. Blagovitch]
Speaking of Blagovitch, if you could read lips, you could tell they weren't taking any chances with the bleeper. They were saying "freak" instead of "f***". :)

I thought the NY governor had a better sense of humor than that. The piece was hilarious. "Give me $50 in circus tickets."

No, that was just Kanye's normal amazing performance..... ;)

See, this is why SNL will never be something that fits for everyone, and why people get tired of it. The humor hits sometimes for some people and sometimes for others. For me, this was a miss, but for others it was a hit.
Humor is subjective and I don't think people remember that sometimes when they're hard on the show.

I read something once...Do you want to entertain 20 million people or 5 million people? To entertain 20 million you have to tone down the humor and be PC. If you want to enjoy entertaining people you will only be able to make 5 million happy.
Another one. David Bowie looked out at the audience during his early 80's "Let's Dance" tour. He saw the auditorium filled with Phil Collins fans. He said he had more fun entertaining Iggy Pop fans.
