I have two Series 2-5400xx Tivos that are hooked to my home network through wireless. I did an upgrade to my first tivo from a 40 gb to a 160 GB hd. That tivo works flawlessly. I acquired a 2nd tivo not long ago and upgraded it from a 120gb to a 160GB hd also. The 120 was making some noise and I didn't want it to crash completely, therefore, the upgrade. It appeared to work fine before the upgrade except a couple times when I plugged it in, it would freeze during bootup and the 2nd time would then bootup. I had the 120 working fine before the upgrade, at least, it appeared to be. I had recorded some programs and such. Now, after the upgrade, it locks up over night. No response from the remote. If I do a hard reboot, unplugging it, then it will bootup and work fine. I have been reading all the numerous posts on this and doing some detective work myself but what I have seen is a difference in the bootup sequence from my 1st tivo. My first tivo, after a bootup, will go all the way to Tivo Central...this 2nd Tivo goes through the welcome screen, then the almost there screen, and then it says to press the Tivo button or Live TV button. If I don't, it goes to standby. Is this an indication of corrupted software? I'm just thinking it shouldn't do that. The hd I put in is a new WD drive. If I remember right, the original drive did the same thing during bootup. Maybe I need a new image?? Could I use the image from my 1st tivo since it works perfectly?
Thank you for your time in advance. :)

Since they are both S2 540's, this is what I would try first.
And if you do go to the trouble of pulling the HD, run some diagnostic tests on it before re-imaging to rule out a bad HD.

I've kind of got turned around here. When the original Maxtor drive comes in the series 2, is the jumper on (DS) Master or (CS) Cable Select?
If I upgrade to a larger western digital drive, how should I jumper it when I reinstall in back in the tivo?
CS, Master w/slave, or no jumper which means master or single.
thanks,

I have put the original HD back in the unit and after booting up and running setup, it works fine, will record shows, download updates, etc. The problem is, when I put it in standby and let it sit overnight, it won't turn on again with the remote. If I unplug it and do a hard reset, it will boot up and work normally. The next time it sits overnight in standby, it won't turn on again. This happens EVERY night. Any ideas?
I bought this as a christmas present for my daughter but things aren't looking good right now.

It’s been four years since I upgraded my 540 TiVo, but I believe I needed to have the drive’s jumper setting to master. When I put my TiVo into stand by mode the only remote button my TiVo responds to is the “TiVo button”.

Default jumper setting on Tivo HD's is CS.

Why put it in standby at all? Unless you use the TV's tuner to watch something live while something else records on the TiVo, there is no benefit to using standby.

thanks for the replies. I am going to just leave it on as you suggested and see if it locks up that way. I currently have the jumper on CS

I know this doesn't fix your problem but don't use standby. Its merely a screen saver with very little effect on the operation of an unwatched Tivo.
