Hey everyone,

I've got a series 2 RCA DVR40. It has served me well, but its hard drive just went to the big spindle in the sky (weeks of pixelation, and now it just keeps rebooting to the GSoD). I have an 80GB drive lying around to use in the box, but I don't have an image - the old drive is too dead to copy off of.

The Hinsdale how-to only talks about starting from and existing drive. Where can I get a clean image for the new disk?

You can buy a copy of Instantcake from DVRUpgrade.com (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/index.cfm)

There's a product called InstantCake which will do the job.
Go here.

I'd think twice about using a used HD in your tivo. Probably not a good idea. Or did you mena you have a unused 80 Gb laying around.
