My old Hughes HDVR2 is failing and I want to activate another HDVR2 that I've acquired. I understand I can take my old access card and put in the new HDVR2 and call DirecTV and use the 722 code to cause the old access card to marry with the new receiver. But what about the TiVo service number, is that on the Access Card? This receiver does not have the latest software so it will need to get an OK from TiVo to install the new software once it downloads from satellite. I'm not clear how using the 722 code will affect the TiVo service number and TiVO authorization process. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It will work but i doubt the dvr service would be activated (ie tuner only). Just give a call, ask for their dvr division and tell them you want to swap a dead hdvr2 for another hdvr2 you have. They should do it no questions asked as long as the second one was turned off properly (ie no owned money on its account). If there was money owed then it is a door stop and you probably can use it for parts. Some say you can put the drive into another unit of same vintage and do a clear and delete. I don't know if this is true. I tried it once and it would not boot. See what others say.

I've used the ext. 722 trick on an HDVR2 successfully because these are the original DTivo series 2 non-RID units. The trick won't work on the DVR40/80, DSR704/708 or most other models, but should work on that one.
