View Full Version : Hot Plugging HDMI

Testpattern

I'm starting a process to add another TV to our HT system. I plan to drive it directly from our S3 using a HDMI active splitter (FireFold product). Both sets will therefore receive the exact same feed from TiVo.

My question to the forum is this.

Does hot plugging HDMI cables result in any risk to hardware? I expect syncing the video may be an issue but I don't want to go down this path if I'm jeopardizing equipment in the HDMI chain.

The reason I want to do this is one of the TVs is a Sony SXRD which one does not simply turn on and off because of the lamp.

Thanks...

I don't think it would kill anything to do it once in a while, but to do it repeatedly would make me anxious. I get occasional pink-hued screens as it is just by switching inputs on my television, and that's unavoidable!

For others who lack HDMI inputs in their TV (this is not your problem, I know), a nice omnibus solution is the new Sony soundbar. For $299, you get not only a decent pseudosurround plus subwoofer, but a three-HDMI-port switcher to boot. (Yet another remote, but you can't have everything.)
