ok, so for the past ~year or so, i have been very happy that i could transfer all my network HD shows (NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX) from my S3 to S3 and more recently to my THD. ever since my cable company (Insight in Columbus, OH) upgraded to their new "4.0" service a month or so back, those same network shows are being randomly flagged as copyrighted. for example, last week's ep of How I Met Your Mother was not protected, but Big Bang Theory, on the same channel just before it, was. also, Dirty Sexy Money was protected 4 weeks ago, but not protected 3 week ago and has been flagged the last 2 weeks.

any ideas why this is happening? i talked to one of the most knowledgeable people at Insight and he said that they haven't done anything different with the broadcast flags, but that the new equipment they turned on might have...which would make sense if the same show was protected each week...not unprotected one week and flagged the next.

thanks...sturmie

yep, there are many settings for that equipment and I have seen past posts of people working through the issue with their company and finding the misconfigurations.

It is against FCC regs for the cable company to mess with the flags which is why they of course say "we do not change them" Luckily it sounds like you got to someone who can explore the new settings more and perhaps iof you innocently mention the FCC without being threatening then you get some motivation for them to fix it.

thanks...so i should just have him take a closer look the settings for their new equipment then?

just curious, but why would a show be copyrighted one week and not the next?

just curious, but why would a show be copyrighted one week and not the next?Because they adjusted the settings on their equipment, knowingly or unknowingly. They could have installed some sort of software or firmware upgrade for their equipment that changed the settings for them.

I'm sure at some point, you had a device or piece of software where you messed up your settings or configuration, and followed some procedure to set them back to the defaults. Broadcast equipment can be pretty complex; much of the equipment out there isn't designed to be easy to use or easy to configure by a layman. Configuration with some gear is done entirely through a command prompt, sort of like MS DOS (if you remember that).
