View Full Version : TiVo HD more than twice as fast as S2SA on TTG?

I have an HD model and a couple of S2SA units (TCD540...). Transfer speeds of non HD high quality content over Cat5e to a dual proc Vista laptop are drastically different.

On the HD model, a 1 hour show takes about 30 min, give or take, but can be as fast as 25. On the S2SA, the same show takes an hour, sometime 2. I am benchmarking times during off-peak use. They are not recording programming, but are tuned to regular stations.

Are the proc and memory significantly better on the HD than the S2SA? I would expect some improvement, but not this much disparity.

Respectfully,

Yes TiVoHDs are much faster at transfers than Series2s

The 540's are the slowest of the S2's. They took some cost-cutting measures that really affected transfers. The current dual tuner systems are pretty fast, but I never did a direct comparison. The model before the 540 were the 240's, and they had respectable rates.

Measured by transferring directly to my computer from the Tivo web interface, my Tivo HD is about 3x as fast as my Series 2 (540) Tivo.

Yes, the TiVo HD is faster than the 540. But it more than makes up for that by offering you much bigger files to transfer. :)
