So, a few weeks ago I posted a thread about having problems with audio dropouts, pixilation and stuttering, and lockups on my S3, primarily only when tuned to an HD channel. I was leaning towards suspecting the hard drives, and my most recent diagnostic is that I ran kickstart 54 - the SMART tests, and got a fail 7 on the external drive (the WD MyDVR Expander) - I think based on somewhere else that this is a Seek Error rate failure. At any rate, I'd like to replace the two drive setup with a single larger drive. Right now, though, I don't really want to lose the recordings I have. I'd like to get a new single drive functioning just to see if that is the problem (no recordings transferred), and I do have such a drive, but I'm not entirely sure how (or if) I can get an empty backup to create such a drive without either divorcing the old A drive first. If I get a USB/eSATA adaptor (any recs on such?), can I create a truncated backup by running with both drives attached, and will that then let me restore to a single drive which I can get functional without the second drive attached? (My only Windows computers available are both laptops, no eSATA connectors).
