Over thanksgiving, my DirectTV Tivo (HDVR2) started randomly locking up. I think it had software 6.4 on it. I was not running anything custom; it would be whatever the default software version the HDVR2 would have pushed down to it.

I've pulled the upgraded single 120GB drive I installed a couple of years ago, and I've got it hooked to a spare PC running seagate drive tools.

Seagate "Quick Test" reported a "read element LBA" failure, so I'm thinking the drive is dying. I've got an extended test running while I make this post, but I am assuming failed drive at this point.

I've got a spare 250GB Maxtor drive here at home - can I use it and see all 250GB just doing a normal hard drive swap?

If so, is it just as simple as following hinsdale step 10, option 3, to preserve all the recordings ?

If not, what other magic would I need to do?

OR, I also have a spare 120GB maxtor drive; should I just stick with under 137GB and use the spare 120GB so I can get my programs backed up and restored tonight ??

Please help answer these questions quickly!!

I don't do Linux, so downloaded http://mfslive.org/winmfs/ to be able to copy + expand 80Gig drives (had one fail, all were the same age) to 320Gig drives in several units

This underlines the need for a imaged hard drive ready to hot swap. I have a spare drive imaged and ready to hot swap for each of my DTivo units.

A drive failure for me means maybe 10 mins of downtime (including the reboot time).

That's just a little too anal. :D

Well - the drive did have several bad blocks, so I tried doing a simple DD and that didn't seem to produce a working drive.

I'm trying to replicate the drive now using MfsLive; I hope this does it.
