I've done a lot of googling and searching msg boards but i don't quite see
some of my specific concerns addressed.

I have a series 2 DT with an 80 gig HD i want to replace with a 200 gig.

I dont' care about the programs on there now.. so if i don't have to do any
copying, i think i'd rather avoid it.

I have a thinkpad t42 laptop, and an external hard disk case. I know in the past a drive has failed to work using partition magic with it. So i'm a little leary of working with it for stuff like this.

So I guess my question is, will instant cake and winmfs format the drive
to the right size?

Should I use my original tivo drive as a source?

or is it the same to extract some kind of iso to to the 200 gig?

if i'm not mistaken, i may have a beta version of tivo software on there.

Nevermind. I remembered that my tivo was blocking my desktop..
and my tivo had to come out anyway, so i just used my
desktop and winmfs.

It's not as intuitive as i thought, but here is some thoughts to share with the next person who will be a newb doing it.

1. The middle cable spot is the slave. Think of it it as "a slave always comes between the master and the instructions (motherboard).

2. Open winmfs and select ONLY the master. I thought you had to select both drives for a & B so that the program wouldn't touch your windows drive.
That's not so. When you "select" a drive, it's to for the sofware to know which dirve to work with as the "patient" to do "operations"..

3. I deleted the windows partition from my replacement drive

4. I then selected my tivo drive

5. I then did the copy command

6. it took about 45 min and copied over everything, my settings nad my programs.

7. don't forget to plug in the new new drives power wire as well as the data wire. I was so happy it said "success" or whatever that i forgot ot plug in the drives power wire wehn back in the tivo. So it was stuck at hte tivo welcome screen.

8. luckily i hadn't put everything back nice and neat, but instead i hooked it up with the tivo still opened to test before i put everything back.

so now i'm a happy camper :)

oh and usb is slower than using IDE cables so go with the IDE instead of usb if you can.

I ended up over trippling my storage space, since i removed an 80 gig drive, and installed a 250 gig drive, and i used the feautre to add some additional space (9%). I used the latest beta version to do it.
