I've been with D* so long, I've forgotten the answer to this...

I gave my old Sony S1 to my FiL and it died, so I've acquired a replacement S2 540 with wireless connector. He doesn't have a wireless router yet and I want to test this used box before he gets it (Christmas present - he's 81!).

I don't have cable at my house and I was wondering if I can connect the box to my network and set it up before he gets it or do I have to wait and do all this when the cable connection's available?

You can do it without cable. There is one point in the setup process where it asks you to verify a channel is correct. Obviously you will not have a picture, but just confirm it anyway. Also, you should let it run for a few days after running guided setup so it can get the latest software updates. When you do the final setup you will have to go into the Network settings and change the wireless setup. Once you do that, you just need to force a connection to get the new guide data and you will be done.

Great, thanks.

I assume I need to connect a phone line for the initial phase still, even though it'll be a wireless setup?

I assume I need to connect a phone line for the initial phase still, even though it'll be a wireless setup? You only need to dial in if the software version on the S2 is lower than 7.2

Good Luck,

If you have an OTA signal at your house (even if it's just one channel) and a spare antenna, I would use that just to make sure the hard drive is working properly, especially if it's a used unit whose history you don't know personally.

Sadly, no OTA where I live - I don't even own an antenna!

I know the person who sold it to me and I trust them. I know it has 250 hours and it successfully completed a C&DE and took two hours to repair its file structure. I'm not too worried about the hard drive as I can always replace it cheaply. It's just the small inconvenience to my FiL.
