I've read a lot here and elsewhere that "automount is disabled by default in XPSP2 and higher and in Vista". I can't speak about XPSP2, but while automount may be off by default in Vista as shipped by Microsoft, you never know what your vendor might have done with a pre-built machine.
For example, my Thinkpad T500 with Vista Ultimate had it enabled by default! (I checked with the "automount" subcommand of "diskpart"). Glad I checked before trying an upgrade.
