I'm giving my dad my R10 which I stopped using in the spring and will be hooking it up for him over the holidays. (He already has D*)
Do I need to call D* first to activate it or do I hook it up and go through the guided setup first.

If you had deactivated it, then you need to activate it on his account. Make sure that there is no outstanding balance on the R10.

there is no outstanding balance, my question is does it matter if I hook it up first and go through the setup or do I call D* first and activate it on his account
or does it even matter what I do first

Set it up first.
When you call, the CSR should get you to check that it's working before ending the call. It could save more calls later on.

Be prepared to have them ask him to buy a new access card for $20, that's what I just had to go through. It arrived promptly with 2nd day delivery, but the delay and the expense was annoying.
