View Full Version : Multi-Room Viewing fails or is too slow

None of the threads I read addressed this issue, as far as I can see.
Sometime this Spring or early Summer MRV became useles between 2 S2DTs on a wireless network.
Seriously, we used to be able to transfer at will and only have minor delays that were not annoying at all. Now it takes hours to transfer a .5 hour recording.
My network is great for everything else, including downloading web content onto the Tivos.
They both have between 50% and 65% signal quality.
Any clues? Maybe the Fall 2008 update will fix what ever got broken in the Spring?
Thanks,
Steve

I don't think it's your TiVos.
Are you wired or wireless? What brand of wireless adapter?
How old is your router?
Do you do any downloading (TiVoCast, Amazon Unbox)? How long does that take?
I can transfer between a S2ST with a TiVo wireless adapter and an S2DT (cabled to the router) faster than real time. Transfers to a PC are also fast from either. I don't think your TiVo software is to blame or more people would be having the problem.

If you can boost your signal quality, that might help. Are you using TiVo adapters? Are the IP addresses getting assigned by a DHCP server, like a router?
Is the speed poor in both directions?

My router is a NETGEAR WGR614v5, I use Tivo wireless adapters. IP address are assigned from DHCP in the router. TivoCast is reasonably quick.
I will check for interference.

My Wireless router is upstairs in my office. My new TiVo HD was put downstairs in the media room. The way it was setup, even with the TiVo wireless adapter, I was getting 45-50% signal strength and MRV, TiVo Come Back, and You Tube views were slow. I was able to move my TiVo adapter by adding an extension to it and repositioning my wireless adapter.
Got up to at least 70% and things were definitely faster.

TiVocast may have a lower bitrate than your shows, so that they seem faster. I have a D-Link gaming router. One thing it does is report signal strength and speed for any connected wireless devices. At 70% signal, connection speed is reduced from 54 to 36 mbps. Not a scientific test, but if you can boost the signal a bit, that might help.
