How can I tell if my HD is bad? My Tivo ( single tuner) keeps stuttering and freezing up then starts for a second then freezes ect..... Is that a bad hard drive or something else. I have restarted it a number of times and it goes through the process fine then when I try to watch any show it just stops and goes and stops and goes then may freeze for few moments?

Thanks for all your help.

How can I tell if my HD is bad?

Pull it, connect it to a pc, and run the manufacturers diagnostic software.

99% of the time the symptoms you describe are caused by a failing hard drive. If you've got anything important on there I try to pull it off with TiVo Desktop ASAP

You also can run the Tivo upgrade tools and copy the shows to another hard drive that way.. it'd be much faster.

Yeah, mine's been doing pretty much the same thing. It only started Tuesday, though. How long has yours been doing this?

Sounds like I should be doing that with mine, too. :(

Personally, would just buy an old junker PC to do something like this or just borrow a friends. It just depends on what is comfortable for you.

The old drive, I'd just put it up on ebay for $5 that way it gets recycled or something. Just be sure to state that it's not working in your Tivo.

Last time I had a TiVo drive die, I put it in my Mac and reformatted it and then used it for years after without a hiccup.

Yes, you can do it with a Mac -- at least EASILY with an Intel Mac. Just get the same Linux Tivo Tools CD image with tivo upgrade tools. It will boot in an Intel Mac.

I tried long ago compiling the tool for a PPC Mac, but there was a problem at that time. I think that issue has been fixed.

Basically -- if you can read the Linux upgrade instructions, you'll be able to do it on a Mac -- but make sure you're referring to the right drives when you're doing it.

(I may be upgrading my TivoHD soon, since it seems like the original drive is going bad on me.)
