Is it possible to play Shoutcast radio streams on the Tivo without running a PC on the network as a middleman?
Is it possible to play MP3s from a NAS device without a PC middleman?
If not, has there been any talk of adding these features?

no, you can't.
Tivo is not smart, it is only a receiver, so you need a program to "send" the content.

It may be possible to run a TiVo-compatible server on your NAS.
There certainly has been talk of adding, say, UPnP support to TiVos. But that talk so far hasn't come from TiVo Inc., just from us. :) They have their own standards (HMO and HME) which, at least at one time, they seemed to want other people to adopt.
UPnP and Shoutcast would be well within the capabilities of the TiVo, with just a little bit of new software. As it is, you can get by with a pretty minimal server. You won't notice it. It'll just sit quietly in the corner of your computer.
