My DSR704 updated this morning after forcing a phone call. I've been randomly forcing calls for a month and this morning it worked.

I believe the software code was downloaded from the satellite since it only took a couple of minutes. The actual install, from what I could gather, took about 15 minutes.

This Series 2 box was out of service for more than a year and I just installed it last month. It was running 3.1.1 but would not update. I tried buying a movie, forcing calls, doing complete-ground-up-restarts and this morning a regular forced "Daily Call" worked.

I infer from this that the software update bit stream is not always in the satellite broadcast after an initial period of time calculated to be long enough to get all installed units up to rev. This has been suggested earlier by others here in the forums and this morning's experience supports that conclusion.

Well I'm tending to agree with you - I had a Samsung 4120 that is on 6.2a. (it's been in the box, as I was keeping it as a spare) I left it hooked up for a week & a couple days ago, lo & behold, it updated to 6.4a. I didn't witness the activation phone call, but since I know it did it in the night, I doubt that it sucessfully downloaded it all by phone)

I also have a Hughes DVR80 spare that's in the same boat - I waited (I thought) for a week hooked up, & after NOT updating, gave up & tried the Samsung. I reconnected it & am going to leave it on it's own & see if it eventually updates as well.

It had to have come from the satellite, and no activation call either.

My system had been disconnected for over a week before I got 6.4a
No phone call, no nothing, just one night it spontaneously decided to reboot.
Since others are reporting that too, it seems DirecTV finally got its act together on this issue.

(I wonder how people are fairing that DIDN'T want to upgrade)

Well guess what - I went down to check on the Hughes & it had pending restart, which I manually did & got 6.4a!

I wonder if it's because D* realized that anyone that did NOT get the upgrade, they would be able to KEEP PPV's on the hd past the 24 hour period. ;) ;)

I've now got 2 old Series I units that I don't actively use, but do have prog on the HD I need to dub off, as well as keeping for spares - think I'll hook them up into the stream & get updated, while it appears to STILL exist!
