View Full Version : Lifetime subcription on Directv/Tivos untransferable and worthless

It took me awhile to understand this, but is the, "Subject" of this thread true?

Since the lifetime Directv/TiVo subscription attached to the account, rather than the unit, at the time that Directv and Tivo parted company, the subscription cannot be transfered and has no value to anyone but me.

I have two Directv/TiVos with lifetime subscriptions but, were I to sell both of them, the buyer would not receive a lifetime contract. On the other hand, I would STILL have a lifetime subscription on my account even if I disposed of all my Directv/TiVos, right?

Only the stand-alone TiVos with lifetime subscriptions still have additional value because of the subscription, right?

Thanks

This may no longer be the case, but if you totally close your account with DirecTV then the lifetime on the account may be transferrable. But, I suspect only one.

Funny thing is, people with the non-directv Tivo's are always complaining that the lifetime goes with the unit and not the account.

What you say is generally the case. As long as you maintain your DirecTV account, you have lifetime DVR status. This is a great thing as it means you can replace equipment forever and not pay any DVR fees. Yes, it means you can't recoup any of the lifetime fee by selling the box, but in my view the account status benefit is more valuable and by now, some four years (or more) later, you have gotten plenty of value from the lifetime sub.

Note that TiVo has in the past run promotions allowing you to "transfer" a DTiVo lifetime status to a new Series 3/TiVoHD box for a (not insubstantial) fee.
