We have had a Humax/Tivo DRT800 for years controlling an older dish receiver using the IR extender cable from the Tivo.

We just upgraded to HD on the dish. They gave us their DVR (A VIP 722) at no extra charge, so we took it even though we have no intention of using their crappy DVR software. I do not care that the recordings ont he Humax will not be HD - they are still a lot better than on old receiver.

But...I am having a lot of trouble with the 722 missing commands from the Tivo. Have tried running through "channel changing" setup multiple times. Seems to work fine for a bit, then start missing digits - usually the first one. So the tivo says "305" and you see the 722 see "05" or sometimes "5"...or even nothing.

The dish remote works...but it seems a bit twitchy. If you enter digits uickly it misses them. you have to hit 3(pause)0(pause)5.
Anyone else having this problem? Not sure if I have a bad 722 or if a different setup code ont he tivo can help.
Anyone have a suggestion on other codes to try?

Really odd, but I did figure this out. Just in case it was interference from some otehr IR source I tried a foil tent over the IR blasters and the front of the dish 722.
That fixed the problem - tivo was able to control 722 perfectly. So I removed tent and started hunting for the source by blocking in different directions. Turns out the interference was from the new Sharp LCD HD Tv. The tivo and 722 are on a shelf over the TV. By psuhing the 722 further back ont he shelf and adding a piece of cardboard extending 6" in front of the shelf right the tivo still able to ontrol the 722 perfectly.
As a sanity check, I tried removing the cardboard-and the 722 misses aboue one out of three commands from the tivo. Put it back and it is 100% accurate.

Also, with cardboard out and TV turned off tivo able to control the 722 perfectly.
Beats the hell out of me, but the light from the LCD Tv must include the frequencies the tivo is putting out. The dish remote must be a slightly different freq, because it was working.

Hope this helps someone else. I spent a whole day fighting with this and was ready to make dish replace the receiver, which they did not want to do since their remote works.

What you did is known as building a "tent" or "fort" for your IR blaster and the box. Usually it's a full enclosure that blacks out all other sources of light so the IR blaster's infra-red flashes are the only thing the Dish box can "see".

You went a little bit more simply, but it worked.

I also wondered, tho', if the speed at which the IR flashes were being emitted might have been too fast. (You mentioned the problem even happened using the box's own remote, IF YOU DID IT TOO FAST.)

I've never had to do this, but with at least some TiVos you can navagate thru the menus to a control that'll let you change the speed the IR blaster flashes at.
