transfering porgrams from a dead tivo

My mom replaced a dead series 2 machine (green screen) with a new series 2 machine. Is there any way to pull the hard drive from the old unit and either install it in the new one or transfer the programs off the hard drive?

Poking around the forums, it appears that using a PC and the tivo desktop software as an intermediary results in a serious loss of video quality.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Nope. You need its TiVo working to be able to access recordings on them. The recordings are encrypted to that mainboard.

You may be able to copy the drive to a good one though, using dd_rescue.

I would try putting the drive in a PC and running the manufacturer standalone diagnostics. If there is a bad area on the drive, the diags will relocate it. Put it back in the TiVo and see if the green screen then completes and the TiVo reboots properly.
