I just got U-Verse installed on Oct 26 and I'm already certain that I will be canceling this service.
It started with the stupid screen saver, so we found a way around that. Then there's the issue with the copy protection and not being able to transfer programs, but I was hoping to find a way around that.
Now here's the clincher: U-Verse decided to send messages to their subscribers over the TV screen and just like the screen saver, the only way out of it is the OK button on the U-Verse remote, and any channel changing is blocked while the message is up there. I spoke with U-Verse's elevated tech support and they informed me that the message feature unfortunately cannot be turned off.
This is pretty much the last straw for me. All of this could be solved if TiVo supported the OK button before a channel change but I can't blame TiVo for this.
For anyone else considering U-Verse, until TiVo comes up with a fix, my advice is DON'T GO THERE!
I will be looking into other options such as Satellite and very soon before I miss any more of my programs.
