We have a DirecTiVo with a couple shows recorded on it that we need to archive permanently (my son and his class on TV and my husband on Fox News).
We don't have a working VCR and only have DVD burners on the laptop/desktop.
What's the easiest way to back up these shows onto a permanent storable/watchable medium?

1. Buy a DVD recorder.
2. Buy a video input card/device for you computer. They have USB versions and PCI versions.
That's what I did when I had an HDVR2

If you had a TivoHD, you could connect to your TiVo with a web browser and download the shows to your computer, as seen below. Unfortunately, this is one of the many TiVo features that DirecTV does offer with its older boxes. You'll have to use a VCR, DVD recorder, or video capture card to duplicate the shows manually.

There are also ways to hack your DirecTivo to allow for some of the more advanced features, including I think video transfers. I have no idea how difficult/practical this is, but a bunch of people on the forum seem to have done this. I'm guessing either the Underground or DirecTV forums here should have more info on what is required.
Good luck.

do a search on Zipper - that takes you halfway there. Then you also have software to put on the PC. So if you want to get stuff off of the DirectTV on a regular basis then this would be the way to go.
If you just want those two recordings and don't feel like fussing much then get a cheap DVD recorder or see if you can borrow one. Perhaps rent a center has some to rent.
PC cards to record from TV sources can come really cheap and USB ones are pretty easy to setup. This would give you the ability to get other shows every now and then but that involves extra cables from the DTiVo to the PC
