I tried searching, but I just got lost in the myriad of posts.

I have a series 2 Tivo with a lifetime service and a 40 GB HD.

I want to add a 2nd HD to it. I have a 160 GB HD that I would like to add (DVRUpgrade does list a 160 GB HD for my unit).

What software/hardware do I need? I think I will need WinMFS, but not sure if I will need anything else.

Is everything already there in the TIVO to bolt in the HD. Will I need another IDE cable (I got tons of them laying around).

Thanks,
Matt

If you buy from DVRupgrade.com, the HD is already ready to install into the tivo and depending on whether you buy a 1st or secondary drive, it should include everything even the drive brackets and any cables necessary.

Matt,

If you truly want to add a drive to your unit, you can use the BlessTiVo software available on the LBA48 CD which is discussed in more detail in this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=198444).

We really don't recommend you add a drive to your existing on though, unless you understand the risks, and are OK with it.

What's the risk? Once you've added the drive, the two will behave "as one" and that means if either drive goes bad, you will have problems until you can fix the software on the drives - and without a good backup, that is not trivial.

Since your unit is probably a few years old, it may very well continue to run fine, but rather than recommending adding drives to these units, we recommend replacing the drives because you can then keep your existing drive as a backup if anything goes wrong with the new one.

To make a backup, you can use the MFStool software on the aforementioned boot CD, or WinMFS which was mentioned by the previous poster.

Both are easy to use using many existing guides and posts documented on the forums.

If I were you I'd copy the 40 on to the 160 and use the single 160 drive. As mentioned by a previous poster two drives can be dangerous, keep your 40 as a backup.

Something else to consider is that most of the series 2 units do not have a place to mount a second hard drive, and the power supply doesn't have an extra connector for a second drive. You can purchase a mounting bracket for two drives, but with the price of hard drives these days, the money is better spend on a larger single drive.

I am planning on doing the same thing for my series 2 TiVo. Can I run the transfer via Windows or is this all strictly Linux? The old drive is pooping out because i can see the "Just a minute" screen and then it all cycles back.
I have has this S2 box for about three years, so how badly will this void any warranty? (I know it will still be useless after digital switch, but I plan on using its room sharing capacity to transfer videos into the other room)
I have switched HDrives in multiple computers, so it is nothing new there, but I am concerned for the software to run it all.
Advice???

At 3 years, your box has no warranty. And it should be old enough to be compatible with a DTV-OTA convertor, and will still work with a cable or other box.

WinMFS can do what you want.
