I got a series3 that drops out audio when first tuning to some digital channels OTA for up to the first 30 seconds, if I leave live mode by rewind or hit pause and go into the buffer drop outs are not there.

I also have been getting a loud static click/pop sound coming out all my channels on CBS 2.1DD at random times.

This is happeneing out the RCA analog output jacks. If I do DD to PCM it hides the problem.

Tivo tech support says my unit is defective and offered a refurshed unit in exchange for my 7 day old Series 3 unit I just purchased at Frys.

Do I truly have a defective unit or is this just a software glitch that plaques all Series 3 models. I never saw this issue on my TivoHD.

I don't have the clicks/pops, but I do get the dropouts on HD channels for the first few seconds - especially ABC.

I'm so happy!! My tivo series 3 is not defective I just heard a click/snap sound from CBS on my samsung HDTV internal tuner tonight so it prooves it ain't the tivo!!!

Now the audio drop outs when first tuning an hd channel is software inmo and can be fixed, prob a resource issue like when scrolling real fast through the guide. I think tivo could fix this issue by buffering the audio for a few more seconds before tuning the channel, maybe a 1/2 to 1 more second delyay would do the trick.

you can tune one of these ota hd channels and hit pause as soon as you tune it and then play and its ok.

Well, hate to break it to you but I use OTA HD on my S3 all the time and I don't get audio drop outs when first tuning in a channel. In fact, that's probably the ONLY time I haven't seen audio dropouts.

There ARE complaints of audio drop outs in general (and I certainly get them) but I see that on both OTA and digital cable with both live and recorded content. Certainly not every time I punch in a channel number.

loss of DD on Tivohd "you will see s3 folks in this thread talk of this issue"

Its amazing you don't have this issue, perhaps you have a different motherboard revision than the rest of us. You got dolby digital set for dolby digital or dolby digital to pcm?

Maybe your local hd stations is broadcasting the DD different than the ones that others are experiencing problems on. I certainly don't see the drop outs on certain hd ota stations, but do others ABC,NBC and sometimes cbs ota never CW or others.

Still think I got bad hardware or a bug in the software?

I get that on Comcast, mostly on the HD stations.
I wait a second, then hit skip forward twice, and the problem goes away.
It may just be one of the two tuners, I will have to play around with it.

So you're saying you yourself don't get dropouts on certain OTA stations but if I don't see it I must be lying?

Listen - you asked for input, I offered it. I don't see dropouts when changing channels. I do get them in the middle of watching programs. Software v9.4-01-2-648 on an S3 I bought in Jan08. No dolby, using an HDMI to DVI cable with RCA for the audio.

Thanks for your input, obviously something is different between your series 3 units and the other folks complaining of this issue, or perhaps the differentlocal stations are the key difference.

But i doubt i have a defective unit since others "not you" are also experiencing this issue on certain OTA digital channels.

Have a good weekend.

just for those searching it appears they fixed this BUG in version 11. I know longer get the drop outs when first tuning HD OTA channels.

I do sometimes some random drop outs durning recordings or viewing HD OTA channels from time to time, but although I'm not 100% convinced its the Tivos fault. I am about 90% convinced these audio problems are coming from the station or general interference from OTA.
