View Full Version : Pink Screen after Power Outage

So the power went out last night, and my two TiVo HDs (one an XL) reboot after power resumes a couple hours later. (argh) The TiVo HD (the one that snappily responds to the remote) comes back as if nothing happened. The XL (which at times is very sluggish to respond to the (same) remote) ends up with a pink screen. When I unplug/replug, the welcome screen shows up, but the second "just a few minutes" screen has a pink hue to it.

But the unit does start up without an obvious hitch. Suddenly the pink hue returns, this time rendering the live broadcast pink. (The picture otherwise is moving fine.) First I think maybe it's the HDMI connection (as mentioned in other threads), not the TiVo (although I did try reconnecting the HDMI with no success). Before I resign to unplugging the unit again, the TiVo XL reboots itself! This time, the pink second welcome screen reappears after a normal first welcome screen, and my heart sinks.

Well, it's four hours later, and the live picture hasn't turned pink again, so I have my fingers crossed. I didn't listen to my dad who said never buy a car in its first model year, and I'm paying for it with my XL. :-D

So what do you think? HDMI (if which the unit rebooting wouldn't make sense)? Or something with the unit itself (oh please no)? And if so, did it just take a couple of reboots to fix everything? And lastly, has there been any damage done to either internal or external hard drive?

when I tested 7 of the tivohds one had a pink screen. I wiggled the hdmi cable in the back of the tivohd and reseated it, then resynced by changing inputs then going back to the hdmi.

I think you had a poor connection with your hdmi cable.

Try swapping hdmi cables with the other unit and see if you ever get the pinik screen on the other unit, that will let you know if its the cable or was just a poor connection or bad hdmi connector. next time you get the pink hue you could also leave it up and connect up some component cables as well to your tv and see if the pink shows up via component as well.

Uninterruptible Power Supply!

It should be required for every TiVo.

I've had this same issue twice after a reboot.
Once when I setup the WD MyDVRExpander. Once more after a software update.
Both times I was fine after another reboot and I also suspect HDMI issues are to blame.

I agree with you mostly except for this: Nothing was being recorded even though it was scheduled. So I think it had SOMETHING to do with the TiVo itself. Then again, all I hear is PINK = HDMI. So you're probably more right than wrong.

Well, like learning to back up your computer files, one learns this after possible disaster. Any quick recommendations, or will anything from someone like APC suffice?

I hear ya, but like I said, the only thing was the TiVo wasn't recording when it should have, and the second time it was Pink, it actually ended up rebooting itself. Still could be HDMI-related, but something was affecting the TiVo too.
