When I first hooked up my Tivo HD XL with HDMI yesterday, I was not getting any audio out of it to the tv. I assumed that my tv only did DVI and no audio thru the HDMI, so I decided that I should pull the tv to run RCA cables cables to it, and right before I went to hit the power button on the tv, the audio cut in.

So I left it the way it was and started messing around, downloading updates and such. Halfway through the updates while I was scrolling through the menus, the audio cut out again.

My next guess was that the HDMI cable was sub-par. I hooked the audio up to my Aiwa receiver using the optical audio connector to see if it was getting audio. It was getting audio at that point, but so was the tv. The audio kicked back in. I just left it.

After changing channels for a bit, the audio cut out again right in the middle of a tv show to both the tv and the receiver.

I restarted the tivo and the audio came back, but went out again later.

When the audio goes out, it goes out for random amounts of time and I can't figure out what causes it to go out, nor what causes it to resume as normal.

This morning I cleared and reset everything and ran Guided setup again. It's still happening.

Does it sound like this one defective?

just curious, if you set dolby digital to dolby digital to pcm in sound output options does the problem go away?

nope didn't help. Before, recorded programs were without sound. Now none of the recorded programs have sound problems but the tivo sound effects don't work at all. It's so strange and completely random.

I bought the Tivo from Newegg, and when it got here, I knew immediately that something might be wrong with it, because the tivo box was already opened and resealed with scotch tape. I've emailed Newegg customer support complaining about it, because I did not request an open box item. I've requested a replacement for a brand new unit.

Yeah, it's definitely not right. Clicking on Youtube brings up Rhapsody. Also after letting it sit in the menu when it automatically goes to live tv, the video was all locked up. the menu was blended with the video. Very strange stuff here. Oh and the audio is gone again. *sigh*

A little something different from the original post but i'm losing audio on commercials (not necessarily a bad thing) but the network audio comes back on as soon as the sow returns...anyone else having this problem?

you notice this on OTA digital channels or any kinda channel? Is it one particular one? Does it stay off the entire commercial or just some times?

I have seen a commercial lose audio for 7 seconds before but It was a digital OTA ATSC channel broadcasting a low def commercial and I am pretty certain it was coming from the station/source.
