View Full Version : Buffer Allowances

Just out of curiosity: In HD TiVos, is the disk space allowed for live-TV buffers hard-reserved, or variable? I ask because of course the buffer space required for HD far exceeds that of SD. Just wondering if the disk space is reserved as a hard allowance, and that if you happen to be watching SD there is a lot of empty space in that allowance, or if that allowance morphs depending on what the tuner(s) is (are) tuned into, HD or SD. Just a random thought.

It is because the "CODE" is written to reduce the amount of code & increase the speed of the software. As a result, the code is written to save a PERCENTAGE of hard drive space. Not a specified space amount. Thus it says to save say 10% of the hard drive space. Versus telling it to reserve 50gb as an example.
Don't quote the exact percentage used. That I don't know, but do know it works on a percentage.

The reserved space is also used for such things as the gold star adds, movie previews, etc.

You would think that since the space required for whatever is a fixed amount, more or less, the space allotted should also be fixed. Then again, I guess the more hard drive storage you have, the more space the TiVo can use for more stuff. (So you would think the live buffer could likewise be extended -- but that's another thread.)

Are you sure? I could swear they fixed that years and years and years ago... or maybe it
was something in the hard drive upgrade tools?
I thought there was a software upgrade years ago that _did_ take a percentage based upon hard drive size, and people complained about it (even though of course extended hard drives are not officially supported), and it changed in a later update???
