Much better than the other episodes this season. Let's hope it's a trend rather than an exception.
I appreciated seeing the old captain - the interaction between her and Donal Logue wasn't nearly so over-the-top as one might expect. The subject matter allowed the episode to lean more toward Charlie's psychology, and there was a meaningful advance in the backstory.
The "mystery" itself was still kind of ridiculous. I never got the purpose of the blackouts, or how long they were - I thought only for a minute or two. If so it strains credulity that the prisoner could have escaped from the solitary box, gone outside, found the lighter and returned during such a short time, all without being detected. Or that he could have melted the plastic bag into a knife while in the solitary box without someone noticing.

The exchange between the new captain and the weepy detective was great.
"Wife number ___?" (perfectly delivered)
"One. And only........"
"I got this, guys"

I think he went out during the first black-out, made the knife, then returned to the box during the second black-out.
But yes, silly. One problem I have with the show this season is that they don't try hard enough to be quirky--that is, they think it's easy and they don't have to work at it, but good quirky takes a lot of thought to pull off properly.

Ouch, a 1.4 in the ratings for Friday compared to a 3.9 from last Monday.
I liked how Cruz knew exactly what the kid was doing when he started shouting and slamming his hands on the table. Very good episode.
This show has the best music as well.

Does anyone recall what happened (or if anything was even shown on screen) to cause Captain Calamity Jane to get busted down? I don't remember anything happening last season to cause it and just assumed she had left the show. Then, she was back this week, so I'm confused.

I, too, enjoyed Captain Calamity Jane's return. I was so afraid they were never going to refer to her again, which would have been a shame because she earned her place in my book last season.
It was left open-ended, so I hope we'll see more of her.
And yes, I have no idea what caused her to get demoted. :(
Wow -- I just noticed that she also played Rachel (Juliet's ill pregnant sister) on "Lost." I had no idea that was her...she gets around!

It would have been funny to see her in a drunken state saying something like "You took my job you f'ing c**k sucker!"

I love all the "first wife" advice.:D
"She was the best thing that ever happened to me."
"No she wasn't. She was the first."
